Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Parthian 𐫡𐫇𐫔 (rwδ /rōδ/), from Proto-Iranian *Hrawdáh (copper, brass), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrawdʰás. The prothetic ա- (a-) is a regular inner-Armenian development as Armenian phonotactics do not allow a word to start with a ր- (r-).

Noun

[edit]

արոյր (aroyr)

  1. brass (alloy of copper and zinc)
