Inherited from Written Oirat ᡐᡆᠯᡅ (toli), from Proto-Mongolic *toli. Cognate with Buryat толи (toli), Mongolian толь (tolʹ), etc.

Sense ‘dictionary’ was a semantic loan from Literary Chinese (jiàn, mirror; dictionary) via Classical Mongolian ᠲᠣᠯᠢ (toli, mirror; dictionary).
