[edit]From магни́т (magnít, “magnet”) + -о- (-o-, connecting vowel) + гора́ (gorá, “mountain”) + -ск (-sk); named after a mountain called магни́тная (magnítnaja, “magnetic”) because it consisted almost completely of iron.
