From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śeimā́ˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *tḱey-meh₂ (settlement, village; family), from the root *tḱey- (to lie down; to settle, inhabit). Cognate to Russian семья (semʹja, family), English home. Compare kaimas.
