French
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From earlier espanouir, from Old French espannir, espanir, espandir, either from Latin expandere or a Germanic loan from Frankish *spannjan, from Proto-Germanic *spannō, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pend- (cognate with English span).
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]épanouir
- (reflexive) to blossom; to bloom; to flower
- (reflexive) to reveal its qualities
- (reflexive, figuratively) to thrive, flourish
Conjugation
[edit]This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
