Crusades today?
[edit]Some of the more lunatic Muslims contend that Israel today is just a continuation of the crusades. Some lunatic Christians want to bring about the Second Coming, Rapture, etc. & prophecy says to do that they first need to take Jerusalem & rebuild Solomon's Temple. They are using the poor Jews as cannon fodder to accomplish that.
I think quite a few Saudis believe this, even the educated ones. The guy I heard it from had a PhD from a respectable US university. I'm not sure if anyone else believes it. Pashley (talk) 02:30, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- That's a new one on me. What's probably more relevant is the attitudes of some American Christians, such as when GW Bush called his aggression against Iraq a "crusade". Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:15, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- The word crusade has been used literally and figuratively for many military campaigns through history, and these can be mentioned in brief. The article is however intended to describe the Crusades, a phrase usually understood as the medieval Catholic campaigns to the Middle East and nothing else. /Yvwv (talk) 02:04, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- There were Medieval Catholic Crusades in Europe, too, such as against the Hussites. I think those should be mentioned even if we choose to focus this article on the ones that ended up in the Middle East. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:04, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- Those are mentioned, & some linked, in the last paragraph of the lead section. I think that is all that need be said, unless there are other crusades that should be added. Pashley (talk) 07:45, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- Alexander Nevsky is based on the history of a crusade by the Teutonic knights against Rus. So far, that's not mentioned in our treatment of the w:Northern Crusades, and it should be added. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:27, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- I wonder if we should mention anything about Robin Hood. While Robin Hood himself is of course fictional, King Richard and Prince John (later King John of course, since he became king after Richard died) are actual historical figures, and the story is of course set in the period when King Richard is away on the crusades. - No. Robin Hood isn't about the Crusades. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:35, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
