Fountain in Ochamchire

Ochamchire or Ochamchira (Abkhaz: Очамчыра, Georgian: ოჩამჩირე) is a small coastal town in Abkhazia.

The town was founded around the 6th century BC (i.e. 2,600 years ago) by Greek colonists under the name of Gyenos.

There are frequent marshrutkas to Sukhumi (50 km, 1 hr).

  • 1 Mokvi Cathedral of the Assumption. Built in 10th century by the Abkhaz king Leon III.
  • 2 Bedia Cathedral, village of Ilori. Built at the end of the 10th century in honor of Our Lady of Blachernae.
  • 3 Ilori Church (The Church of St. George of Ilori). Built in 11th century, it is a major pilgrimage center for the residents of western Georgia and Abkhazia. The building has a single-nave design. Besides it operates up to nowadays.
