Wikipedia:WikiProject Geology/Meteorites

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Meteorites task force is a group of editors who aim to improve Wikipedia's articles about Meteorites as part of WikiProject Geology and WikiProject Astronomy.

The articles in Category:Meteorites and its sub-categories have tended to be overlooked, falling as they do between geology and astronomy; the existence of this task force will keep them in view and help prevent future neglect.

Goals

[edit]

To bring each of Wikipedia's articles on meteorites to at least "B-class", comprehensively covering all major aspects of the subject.

I added some information on the Guffey ungrouped iron meteorite (possible ataxite) to the Guffey, Colorado article. I don't know if this meteorite is notable enough to deserve its own article. It is the largest meteorite ever recovered in the US state of Colorado. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about meteorites, so I thought I would note it here and let someone run with it, if they chose. GeoGreg (talk) 17:30, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I've been working on the Polonnaruwa (meteorite)‎ article for a while, but it is not yet clear if the object is actually a meteorite. Additional expertise would be great. Cheers, BatteryIncluded (talk) 13:11, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Focus for the month

[edit]
  • January 2013 - Create articles (or link to subsections of existing articles) for as many red links as possible, especially in the templates. List here.
  • December 2012 - WikiProject Geology's December collaboration was: improve articles in Category:Meteorites and its sub-categories.

Approach

[edit]

Articles should present the subject in a way that is easy for a complete newcomer to understand, while retaining informative content to engage the more advanced reader. The usual Wikipedia standards apply:

Naming conventions

[edit]

In work. See discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Geology/Meteorites#Naming_convention_question.

[edit]

Meteorite classification is a complex subject with a long history. Long story short, we need to choose one scheme and use it consistently across all articles, infoboxes and navboxes in the projects scope.

The recommended scheme is:

  • Based on Weisberg, McCoy, Krot 2006:
  • M. K. Weisberg; T. J. McCoy; A. N. Krot (2006). "Systematics and Evaluation of Meteorite Classification". In D. S. Lauretta; H. Y. McSween, Jr. (eds.). Meteorites and the early solar system II (PDF). Tucson: University of Arizona Press. pp. 19–52. ISBN 978-0816525621. Retrieved 15 December 2012.
  • With additions of:
  • For IIF irons see:
  • Kracher, Alfred; Willis, John; Wasson, John T (31 May 1980). "Chemical classification of iron meteorites—IX. A new group (IIF), revision of IAB and IIICD, and data on 57 additional irons". Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. 44 (6): 773–787. Bibcode:1980GeCoA..44..773K. doi:10.1016/0016-7037(80)90259-8.
  • For the new views on enstatite achondrites see:
  • Keil, Klaus (31 December 2009). "Enstatite achondrite meteorites (aubrites) and the histories of their asteroidal parent bodies". Chemie der Erde - Geochemistry. 70 (4): 295–317. doi:10.1016/j.chemer.2010.02.002.

Please familiarise yourself with it and use it whenever you edit one of "our" articles.

Notes

Stubs

The list of stubs is at Category:Meteorite stubs. A few remain in Category:Meteoroid stubs awaiting transfer by a bot in the new year. Only articles about objects which have impacted a planet are "ours"; objects still in the heavens are the responsibility of WikiProject Astronomy.

Commons

Work through Category:Meteorites on Wikimedia Commons looking for:

  • Illustrations for the 74 meteorite articles which lack them; see Category:Meteorite articles without images
  • Potential new meteorite articles or links to existing ones we don't yet know about
  • Potential new cultural item articles or links to existing ones we don't yet know about
  • Potential new meteorite people articles or links to existing ones we don't yet know about
  • Potential new strewn field articles (there are at least half a dozen strewn field maps scattered on there) or links to existing ones we don't yet know about
  • Anything else that pops out

Importance

[edit]
Meteorites Taskforce Articles by importance (refresh)
Top  High  Mid  Low  NA  ??? Total
 2  41  71  240  129 17  500

This section describes a semi-automated way to determine the importance of each of "our" articles.

Using the Wikipedia Release Version tools on the Wikimedia Toolserver it is a simple task to generate a list of all articles in a Category sorted in any of several ways. To assess importance we sort by release version score, the last column in the toolserver generated lists (described here).

The following table gives a link to such a list for each Category of interest and the range of scores for articles of each importance value within that category. Before using the links, force an update of the toolserver data using the instructions at User:SelectionBot/Web/Guide#Update project data.

It may occasionally be necessary to adjust the ranges in the table so that breaks fall at reasonable places in the lists.

Meteorites Taskforce  articles by quality     Refresh

We are aiming for all our articles to be "B-Class" or higher. According to Wikipedia:Version 1.0_Editorial Team/Release Version Criteria#Proposed quality standards this means that they are expected to be reasonably satisfactory for an ordinary reader. The following are minimum guidelines.

In no particular order, articles should:

  • be neutral point-of-view,
  • be reasonably clear,
  • be organized adequately,
  • have no known factual errors,
  • have appropriate categorization,
  • be adequate in scope and proportion,
  • use style consistently within the article,
  • be visually adequate (that is, not ugly),
  • use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation,
  • list at least one appropriate reference, source, further information item, or external link. A link fulfills this obligation only if it connects to a reputable source. Government, professional or education sites are reputable for this purpose. Any external links must also still be valid (that is, still connect to the intended material).
  • Pictures are recommended but normally not required. Exceptions may be made where especially relevant.

Participation

Everyone is encouraged to help with the tasks listed above. You may also wish to add this page to your watchlist to keep an eye on developments.

Place {{WikiProject Geology|class=|importance=|meteorite=Yes|meteorite-importance=}} onto any new article's talk page for it to be recognised and assessed by this task force.

An article's assessment is generated from the class and importance parameters and helps organise relevant articles for improvement.

When assessed, the class and importance parameters are filled in, like this:

{{WikiProject Geology|class=Start|importance=Mid|meteorite=yes|meteorite-importance=High}}

and the banner looks like this:

WikiProject iconGeology: Meteorites Start‑class Mid‑importance
WikiProject iconThis article is within the scope of WikiProject Geology, an attempt at creating a standardized, informative, comprehensive and easy-to-use geology resource. If you would like to participate, you can choose to edit this article, or visit the project page for more information.
StartThis article has been rated as Start-class on Wikipedia's content assessment scale.
MidThis article has been rated as Mid-importance on the project's importance scale.

This article is supported by the Meteorites task force (assessed as High-importance).
