Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

Account created on October 10, same as most recent blocked account (Amber hurt). Same edits on page Mark Karpelès as prior sockpuppets, including downplaying mentions of his arrests and convictions [1]. Specific changes include:

  • Removing mention of arrest for Mt. Gox action in paragraph about his role at Mt. Gox (removed line "and Karpelès was arrested that year and eventually convicted of data manipulation and falsification of records at Mt. Gox.")
  • Moving the guilty verdict against Karpeles by the Tokyo District Court to a sentence after the sentence noting the charges of which he was found not guilty. This is the same as prior sockpuppets, and contrary to how the sources discuss the conviction.
    • Changing "On 14 March 2019, the Tokyo District Court found Karpelès guilty of one count of data manipulation for falsifying data to inflate Mt. Gox's holdings by $33.5 million and not guilty of all other charges." to "On 14 March 2019, the Tokyo District Court acquitted former Mt. Gox chief Karpelès of most charges in major bitcoin case. The Tokyo District Court found Karpelès guilty on one count of data manipulation related to Mt. Gox's account balances."
      • Prior sockpuppet Amber hurt changed to "After a lengthy trial, Karpelès was acquitted of the more serious charges, including embezzlement and breach of trust. However, in March 2019, the Tokyo District Court found him guilty of data manipulation." [2]
      • Sockpuppet prior to that, OnikageTenchu, changed to "On 14 March 2019, the Tokyo District Court acquitted Karpelès of most charges in major bitcoin case. The Tokyo District Court found Karpelès guilty on only one count of data manipulation related to Mt. Gox's account balances." [3]
      • Same language by prior sockpuppets, including original change by sockpuppeteer Lustigermutiger21: "On 14 March 2019, the Tokyo District Court acquitted former Mt. Gox chief Karpelès of most charges in major bitcoin case. The Tokyo District Court found Karpelès guilty on only one count of data manipulation related to Mt. Gox's account balances." [4]
  • Restored the apparently false statement "though no evidence supported this theory" regarding a Silk Road investigation that is not supported by the cited sources.
  • Restored exact same language and Twitter citation (with odd title formatting) quoting article subject about Silk Road investigation ("Mark Karpeles on Twitter: "This is probably going to be disappointing for you, but I am not and have never been Dread Pirate Roberts." ")
  • Moved fraud conviction in France out of chronological order to bottom of section. New information about prior arrests and convictions in France that had been added since the last sockpuppet were also removed entirely ("Karpelès had previously been arrested twice in France for charges related to computer fraud, and was convicted and received a suspended sentence of three months as a result of one of the arrests.")
  • Overlinking name Ross Ulbricht with 3 links in the same sentence, despite it already being linked.
  • These are the same edits as prior sockpuppets. Compare with prior sockpuppet Amber hurt's edits: [5]
  • The account has also made almost the same edits as the sockpuppeteer's account on Mt. Gox. Comparing the versions by those two accounts [6], they are restoring nearly identical content. If you compare with the page prior to the Ayohama's edits, you can see how much content they actually removed and changed [7]. Significantly, they removed all content about the arrest of Mark Karpelès.
    • This account, as with prior sockpuppets, attempts to downplay the wrongdoing of Karpelès while blaming the collapse of Mt. Gox on prior hacks (which is the same excuse Karpelès has tried to use). An example of this is the new paragraph on Alexander Vinnik in the Mt. Gox edits, where the editor says U.S. authorities "linked him to the collapse of Mt. Gox" (which is not supported by the cited source, which only mentions a link to the hack of Mt. Gox). Despite this, any mention of Karpelès's arrest and conviction related to Mt. Gox is entirely removed by the edits to the page, the same as the sockpuppeteer's edits.

Checkuser requested because this sockpuppeteer has used other sleeper accounts in the past. – notwally (talk) 21:31, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Also noting that Ayohama made the same edit as Lustigermutiger21 to add "In November 2021, Yousuf was included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list." to the lead of Dadvan Yousuf. Compare [8] with [9].
  • Noting for future cases that this sockpuppeteer may be related to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Kcosip based on similar topics (Dadvan Yousuf), similar editing styles (multiple consecutive edits, sometimes dozens in a row), similar edit summaries (including the same edit summary repeated for numerous edits), and similar use of multiple sleeper accounts. Also seems to be a similar frequent use of the Teahouse by many of the accounts. Additional similarities include focusing on "promotional" and "neutral" content, as well as adding excessive overlinking to articles. – notwally (talk) 01:43, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Brand new account that partially restored the same changes on Claude Jeancolas that were made by the sockpuppet Ayohama who was banned today. Compare [10] with the prior account [11] [12]. – notwally (talk) 04:09, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
