WikiProject Genealogy - newsletter No.5 -2017
[edit]Newsletter Nr 5, 2017-12-30, for WikiProject Genealogy (and Wikimedia genealogy project on Meta)
Participation: This is the fifth newsletter sent by mass mail to members in Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy, to everyone who voted a support for establishing a potential Wikimedia genealogy project on meta, and anyone who during the years showed an interest in genealogy on talk pages and likewise. (To discontinue receiving Project Genealogy newsletters, please see below) A demo wiki is up and running! Dear members of WikiProject Genealogy, this will be the last newsletter for 2017, but maybe the most important one! You can already now try out the demo for a genealogy wiki at https://tools.wmflabs.org/genealogy/wiki/Main_Page and try out the functions. You will find parts of the 18th Pharao dynasty and other records submitted by the 7 first users, and it would be great if you would add some records. And with those great news we want to wish you a creative New Year 2018!
Cheers from your WikiProject Genealogy coordinator Dan Koehl. To discontinue receiving Project Genealogy newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Mother India
[edit]I reverted what you added to this article; it looked like a link to the movie. Then I saw that you appear to be an experienced user. What was it really, and why did you add it with no context or explanation? What about copyright? Please explain. Bollyjeff | talk 00:45, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, Yes, I added a link to the movie on YouTube, and the movie itself in the article. The movie is in the public domain, and it is uploaded to Commons. It is essential that an online encyclopedia provides a link to the content it is talking about. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:02, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:Larzac.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Larzac.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:41, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
FFD and PROD
[edit]Hi, I noticed that there has been a increase in nominations at WP:FFD that are essentially non-controversial. Have you considered using WP:PROD instead? It might be a more efficient way for some of those "redundant to a better quality image" nominations. Salavat (talk) 23:50, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Salavat,
- Actually that may be a good question. I am not very familiar with the deletion process here. I thought that at least some of the fair use images might be useful, and therefore have to be moved to Commons. What do you think? But why did you revert yourself? Regards, Yann (talk) 00:04, 3 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't care about it being deleted, but why did you mark it as F9 copyvio? It was a G2 test. Now it looks like I uploaded a copyvio, but it was properly licensed. Alexis Jazz (talk) 19:21, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
- Sorry, but that's what you wrote yourself in the description. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:02, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
- This was the description: "Just testing if I can upload mp4. (I cut it short because the music has copyright and there is no need to upload a large file)"
- The original file had copyrighted music, so for the test I cut it short to make sure it wouldn't. And it didn't. In hindsight I guess I should have worded it more clearly. I am so sorry I didn't look up Big Buck Bunny to upload that instead.. Alexis Jazz (talk) 22:27, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
- OK, I interpreted as the content is copyrighted. I am not an admin here, so I can't change the deletion rationale. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:23, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
They're allowed to remove messages. That way I know they saw them.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 16:21, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- OK, that's a different policy than on Commons. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:59, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
A Visit to the Seaside (1908)
[edit]Hello Yann, why can't we copy this film on Commons ? Yours, --Marc-AntoineV (talk) 09:00, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Marc-AntoineV: Hi, This is a British film, and the author is George Albert Smith, who died in 1959. So it will be in the public domain in UK in 2030. Regards, Yann (talk) 09:51, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- Damned ! Thks anyway. --Marc-AntoineV (talk) 10:28, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

- On a related note, I had tried and failed some years back to get File:Bloody Saturday, Shanghai.jpg through FPC, and while I would have liked a chance for co-nom I am none the less grateful that you found and nominated a superior version of the photo for featured picture consideration. It really is a good picture, particularly for the breadth of emotions it captures, and well deserves its status as a featured picture. Well done :) TomStar81 (Talk) 19:35, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Image source problem with File:Max beckmann, auutoritratto frontale con frontone di casa nello sfondo, 1918.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Max beckmann, auutoritratto frontale con frontone di casa nello sfondo, 1918.jpg.
This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 13:19, 5 January 2019 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ronhjones (Talk) 13:19, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Ronhjones: All information is there. I fixed the description. Regards, Yann (talk) 13:46, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

I've put up a second alt. Could you have a look?
Also, sorry for the alts. It's one of those things where I wanted to support, didn't like an aspect of it, thought "Y'know, I'd happily restore that..." and so... did. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.4% of all FPs 23:21, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
Hey, Yann, um, what's "enquête R. Chavagnes" mean? Trying to figure out if that's a note of a bequest, or an artist stamp or a library stamp or what. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.4% of all FPs 10:03, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Adam Cuerden: Hi,
- I have no idea. May be it would be clearer if we would know who is R. Chavagnes, and what role did s/he played in this publication? He may be Chavagnes, René (1883-1956), according to [1]. So if he is the author of this engraving, it may not be in the public domain. Regards, Yann (talk) 11:52, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Probably not: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%C3%A9_Chavagnes says that one's a journalist. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.4% of all FPs 12:19, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Adam Cuerden: Yes, his biography doesn't match with an artist. So "enquête" seems to mean that he made a list of portraits available in the Opera Library. Regards, Yann (talk) 12:50, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I suppose I should remove that stamp when restoring? I'm sure that's not part of the actual poster design (that's surely a poster design, right?) Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.4% of all FPs 12:55, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Adam Cuerden: Yes, his biography doesn't match with an artist. So "enquête" seems to mean that he made a list of portraits available in the Opera Library. Regards, Yann (talk) 12:50, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

- I just noticed https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb443576734 calls it an "Image de presse" - could this have been adapted from for illustrating an article by Chavagnes? Though this is so obviously a poster design it seems doubtful that was the original intent. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.4% of all FPs 13:07, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Adam Cuerden: I don't see this mention. I see "Projet d'affiche", which effectively means "poster", although 24,5 x 18 cm seems a bit small for a poster. And yes, the stamp is not part of the original design, it can be safely removed. Regards, Yann (talk) 13:12, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Ah, yes, thank you! It seems likely, then, that the artist didn't sign the image, and thus - as per quite a number of posters of the period - would likely have been uncredited. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.4% of all FPs 13:16, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
How's that look to ye? I noticed work had stopped for a while, and... may have meddled again. If you don't like it, just let me know and I'll spin it off, and then hand back to you. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.4% of all FPs 03:06, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Adam Cuerden: Hi,
- Good work, but could you please upload as a separate file? Thanks, Yann (talk) 13:40, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Just to note, I tweaked the image, partially in response to Alt 1. I don't want to say more about Alt 1 than I already said there. Or, rather, I want to say a lot more, but what I said will do. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.4% of all FPs 11:17, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Bloody Saturday is a black-and-white photograph taken on 28 August 1937, a few minutes after a Japanese air attack struck civilians during the Battle of Shanghai in the Second Sino-Japanese War. It depicts a baby named Ping Mei, one of the few survivors of the attack, crying amid the bombed-out wreckage of Shanghai South railway station; the baby's mother lay dead nearby. The photographer, H. S. "Newsreel" Wong, owned a camera shop in Shanghai and provided photographs and films for various newspapers and agencies. Within a year of its publication, the photograph had been seen by more than 136 million people around the world, and became a cultural icon demonstrating Japanese wartime atrocities in China. [edit]Hi. Thank you for creating Odeillo solar furnace on July 18, 2015 .This article is extremely similar (I am bilingual anglais-français) to Four solaire d'Odeillo (created June 30, 2005) and for the most part appears to be a translation from that article. If that is the case, could you please consider adding the attribution per WP:TFOLWP to the talk page of the English article. (see this for an example). The Rudra Mahalaya Temple is an ancient temple complex at Siddhpur in the Patan district of Gujarat, India. The temple was completed in 1140 by Jayasimha Siddharaja, but in 1296, Alauddin Khalji sent an army under Ulugh Khan and Nusrat Khan, who dismantled the structure. In 1414 or 1415, the temple was further destroyed and the western part was converted into a congregational mosque by Muslim ruler Ahmad Shah I of the Muzaffarid dynasty. Apart from the mosque, the surviving fragments consist of two porches, a torana (ornamental gateway) and a few pillars. Photograph credit: Bourne & Shepherd; retouched by Yann Forget

The Tomb of Nebamun is the burial place of a middle-ranking official from the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt who lived around 1350 BCE and worked at the vast temple complex near Thebes. The richly decorated tomb was discovered in 1820 by a young Greek, Giovanni d'Athanasi, an agent for the English Egyptologist Henry Salt. Portions of the plaster frescoes were hacked off the walls and sold to the British Museum the following year. This polychrome fragment depicts date palms, sycamore trees, and a pool teeming with life. D'Athanasi died in poverty without revealing the precise location of the tomb.
