Before Peter Levin became a director he began his career as an actor. He appeared on Broadway in the original production of "The Diary Of Anne Frank" playing the role of Peter Van Daan. The play opened at the Cort Theater on October 5, 1955. In the program he was listed as David Levin. After military service(1956-1958 Levin changed his first name to Peter due to conflicts with another David Levin in Aftra. He played many roles in stock and repertory including Horatio in "Hamlet" and Orlando in "As You Like It", both at The San Diego Old Globe Theater in 1960. He appeared with the APA Shakesperean Repertory Season at The McCarter Theater in 1961 playing Orlando and also Demetrius in "A Midsummer Nights Dream". He played Parritt in "The Iceman Cometh" at The Arena Stage in Washington D.C. In summer stock he played Aston in Pinter's "The Caretaker", Eban in O'Neill's "Desire Under The Elms", and Cliff in Osborne's "Look Back In Anger".
