I'm sorry, but who could you ever let this RfA go through? The editor's only been truly active for the last 4 months and has few Wikipedia namespace edits. Nearly all the oppose votes were because of lack of experience and not random things; there was obviously serious opposition arguments and I'm afraid to say that I believe the RfA tally was the only arguement read! There were 13 opposes and 7 neutrals, alomst all citing the same reason. If that isn't reasonalbe doubt not to appoint tools, I don't know what is. I really think out standards have slipped... Spawn Man 07:51, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- I hate to clutter Nichalp's talkpage, but I really must reply. To say that our standards have slipped is so far from the truth. Our standards are currently impossibly high and few people can pass them. Anyone who has been around for a few months, hasn't made a dick of themselves, and wants to help should be trusted, in my opinion. Ignoring the impossibly high standards of the community may not reflect consensus, but it's most certainly the right thing to do in this instance. ^demon[omg plz] 15:38, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

- Sigh... Fine. When he makes a mistake I'm not even going to attempt to say "I told you so". Editors need time to make mistakes and find the in's and out's. I'm only just discovering some stuff and learning from my mistakes. There's no way I could ever see someone who's been here actively for 4 months having already made all those mistakes and discoveries. I've seen people with higher credentials denied; I guess I'm just a little bit bewildered about the promotion, but I guess it's out of my hands now, not that it ever was. Fine, I trust your judgement, even if in this instance I think it's a little flawed. Sorry if I sounded as though I was accusing you of going against consensus. Ah well, back to work I guess. ;) Cheers, Spawn Man 06:12, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- If he makes a mistake, tell the community "I told you so", not us. As far as I'm concerned there was clearly a consensus to promote in that case. --Deskana (talk) 10:00, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: (User talk:ais523) Template bug
[edit]I think I've fixed it. I know what was causing it (a strange mix of HTML and wiki table markup) but not why the mix in question causes the bug; the MediaWiki parser actually emitted <p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>
before the table in the previous version (which is explicitly the code for several blank paragraphs), but I have no idea why. Hope that helps! --ais523 09:07, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
mumbai suburbs and neighborhoods
[edit](I think there needs to be some guidelines for ca'ting an article as a suburb or a neighbourhood. See Category:Mumbai neighbourhoods and Category:Suburbs of Mumbai . Should Andheri for example be a suburb or a neighbourhood? Its outside the city district, but where are the city limits? -- PlaneMad|YakYak 13:37, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
The definition of Mumbai includes both the city and suburban districts. Together they form the metropolis of Mumbai, or what is (now rarely) called Greater Mumbai. Mumbai city only includes the city area. Suburbs start at Bandra/Sion and extend past the city limits. In general, they refer to all stops on the three suburban lines. Mumbai neighbourhoods on the other hand only includes places within the metropolitan limits of Mumbai.)
This was the article u wrote in march 2007.
I have some opinion on it.
Mumbai consists of 2 districts. mumbai city district and mumbai suburban district. The mumbai subruban district was created only on 1990.
The definition of city is given by limits of municipal authority. BMC authority is till dahisar and mulund.Suburbs begin from end of mulund and dahisar and mankhurd. SO thane navi mumbai, mira road bhayander are actual suburbs. Districts are only for revenue/land evaluation.
Mumbai's population is population till mulund and dahisar. ie which comes under BMC
Mumbai agglomeration/metropolitan population is population of Area which comes under jurisdiction of MMRDA(mumbai metro region devp authority).
If u consider mumbai city to be mumbai city district, its population will be around 60 lakhs. courtesy election commission
Thanks and pls reply and change the article for mumbai :)
- Anything north of Mahim and Sion is suburban Mumbai. Please do not get confused with what is called a suburb and metro. This may help better your understanding.
- Mumbai is classified as a metropolis.
- A metropolis consists of a city and suburbs. In India it is usually governed by a single civic organization. Just to reinforce my point. If you are travelling on the Eastern Express Highway and are in the suburban region, you will see signboards pointing to "Mumbai".
- The Mumbai metropolitan region consists of the extended suburbs. They are really independent cities themselves, but since daily population migration is so high, it is considered to be a single urban conurbation.
=Nichalp «Talk»= 17:23, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
dear nischalp, i agree there are boards pointing to mumbai but they also boards which also point to dadar which is in city district. it doesn't meant dadar is not in city district. here mumbai means flora fountain.hutatma chowk which is a zero point for Mumbai. ie any distace from mumbai is measured from there.
If u consider mumbai city district to be single city then it is not highest populated independent city in the world. most of population is contributed by suburban district.
Mumbai suburban district shouldn't be named so, since it has left bein suburban in nature. mumbai south and mumbai north ie will be good name i think. any good comments , my friend

Two India pages?
[edit]Hi Nichalp, I am old enough to remember that, in the early 80s, Britannica had two encyclopedias – Micropedia and Macropedia. The former had brief articles; the country articles, as I remember them, were a page or less. The latter covered countries in exhaustive detail (pages and pages). Given all the problems with the India page, and people wanting to add material to it, I was wondering if it makes sense to have two India pages: India (concise) and India (comprehensive). The former would have a limit of 30KB (i.e. half the size of the current article), no subsections, and written in classic summary style; the latter can have more details. There would be other questions, i.e. which would be the FA and the primary India, but I'm sure those issues could be worked out. And India would link to a dab page. What do you think? - One, the comparison between Mumbai and Dadar are not the same. You see boards pointing to Mumbai in Jogeshwari, but you don't see boards pointing to "Mumbai" when your at Dadar.
- Two, I'm not saying that the suburban region is not a part of Mumbai. The suburbs extend from Bandra/Sion upto Dahisar, Mulund and Mankhurd and is an integral part of the city, but cannot be called "city" as such. You would have to first understand the difference between a city and metro. You're confusing the two. Mumbai is similar to London in this respect. See London#Definitions.
- Three, Hutatma Chowk is not the zero point of the city. The original zero point is St Thomas's Cathedral, and milestones dating back to the early 19th century point indicate the distance from the church.

population details
[edit]hi nischalp: i have a doubt.
The population details below the first picture was given as as follows:
population :13 million density 21880/sqkm metro: 19.7 million
is this means 13 million belongs to mumbai city or mumbai metropolis(city+suburb district) .
if 13 million is population of mumbai metropolis, then what does 19.7 million represent.
i don't think 13 million is population of only city district.
pls help me by clarifying
Bala 207 09:36, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- I would appreciate it if you get my user handle spelt correctly. The 19 million is an agglomeration, (large urban clusters where the built-up zones of influence of distinct cities or towns are connected by continuous built-up development). See world's largest cities. The Mumbai agglomeration, officially known as the Mumbai metropolitan area consists of seven urban areas. See the articles. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:23, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
sorry friend.
next time i will call u nichalp. i got ur point. But my concern is definition of metro.
read this written in intro of mumbai
With an estimated population of about 13 million, it is the largest metropolis in India and one of the most populous cities in the world.
it is saying 19 million is population of metro.
so what does metro means? metropolis or metropolitan area. its just a doubt
now link to largest cities in the page is given to largest agglomerations. there is another page in wikipedia containing list of largest cities/single administrative unit. List_of_cities_by_population
which is the proper link to largest cities?
i think wikipedia should be consistent. anybody new to mumbai and want to know abt it ,will be confused with these articles
Bala 207 07:04, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- Metropolis and metropolitan area are confusing terms, unevenly applied the world over. In India, any city with a population of over 4 million is a metro [2]. This definition though, only applies to the population within municipal corporation limits. I think the 19 million bit has now been excided. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:28, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Name
[edit]The native name of the capital of Maharashtra state is Mumbai मुंबई. Native means as used by the natives of the city. The other name include Bombay, Bambai, Bom Bahia etc. Now tht name of the city is same in all languages, one gets confused between 'native name' and 'other name'. Native name is मुंबई (transliteration) and Other name is MumbaiThe template box is rendered in such way that the native name in native script and its transliteration appears in the map. Also ur worries about appearence of native name in map is wrong. Most use updated browsers hence dont worry about rendering of Marathi script. Its the right way to go and used also in Bangalore. Please dont revert back. (Stateofart 15:30, 19 October 2007 (UTC))
The template box is purposely designed the way which keeps native script and its english transliteration on map. More important is the accuracy and correctness of information rather than consensus. Unarguably native name and other name has been alloted the places in box and we should maintain that. We cant interchange them for the sake of convenience. Even if this is english wikipedia the importance of native names have been kept intact and in Mumbai's case there's no such problem as native name equals English name. (Stateofart 15:38, 19 October 2007 (UTC))
The word native name was picked up from the country template- i am unable to understand this. The fact that the term native name exists in template box itself says everything.
but there is nothing incorrect in having Mumbai in English in the infobox.- Only because native and English name of city is same. Point is that native name in native script and its transliteration are supposed to appear on map not English names. (hence when we ill them it automatically appears on map)
Consensus is official policy on Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia:Consensus- in that case its only u who's objecting. The folks at Kolkata, Bangalore or Mumbai dont have problems with that. (Stateofart 15:53, 19 October 2007 (UTC))
- Which folks? A random editor comes and makes the change and then you claim it is consensus. There was complete consensus when the template was made to keep out an edit war on the language scripts. As part of the team that helped in creating the template, I would certainly be aware of it. If you want to make the global change, please place a request on Template talk:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction and a cc to Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics instead of acting unilaterally and assuming that I am going against consensensus. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:01, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Andhraseal.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Andhraseal.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Lara❤Love 14:29, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- The boilerplate states "This tag is meaningless without an accompanying fair use rationale which must be unique to the usage of THIS image in each article in which it is used." I didn't write it, I just read it. If there is a more appropriate copyright tag, feel free to switch to it. As a 'crat, I'd think you'd use fair use rationales for your copyrighted images, and I'd also not expect you use "common sense" as a reason for not doing so. In my opinion, common sense would tell anyone the reason why any image meets fair use, but that doesn't mean we don't still have to include a rationale. Lara❤Love 19:58, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Nichalp, can you pls call me up @ 09915585230, I want to discuss the same, else give me your contact number and I will give a call to you, you can even email me at Vjdchauhan@gmail.com. I would like you to check my contributions its primarily related to categorization of pages as I think then we will be in a better context to discuss the same (Wikimedia India Chapter). Also pls don't put too much weightage on my viewpoint there on my User Page else it will be difficult and you would be listening me through a filter, just consider me a as a person who is passionate about Wikipedia. Thanks. Vjdchauhan. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.163.66.149 (talk) 10:33, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Was it fair?
[edit]A template created by me was deleted (I wasn't even informed). But seeing its deletion process I seem to feel that it was deleted in a haste ie. without any consensus. Please see:WildLife of India: deletion log KnowledgeHegemony 14:00, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Do you think it needs to be reopened? =Nichalp «Talk»= 03:45, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yes if thats possible.KnowledgeHegemony 11:21, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I noticed you were online. Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Chris G 3 is ready to be closed if you have a moment. Cheers, WjBscribe 05:02, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up. :) =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:16, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- No prob - btw, with this rename request - the software is now much more strict about similar usernames. The addition of a space and a change in capitalisation will be judged by it too similar to an existing username and it will refuse to create a new account. WjBscribe 05:29, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, I see you spotted that anyway. Never mind, WjBscribe 05:30, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

- We can't go one against the other's words constantly. So is planet Bollywood reliable or not? Shahid • Talk2me 09:33, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- For this specific site I would say no. I cannot find any credible site that quotes planetbollywood.com =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:39, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- If you make a Rediff search, you will find Planet Bollywood there[3]. And these are reviews, not information of Zinta. Professional reviews. Regards, Shahid • Talk2me 09:45, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- Of course it will be displayed in a search! I'm asking you to search for a rediff.com article (or any other such site) that specifically cites the website in its article. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:24, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
