- I have had a look at your edits on the Priscila P page, they seem fine in terms of contents but then I'm no ultra liberal! The links/references do need work though. Also you can add double brackets to directly wikilink an internal wikipedia article for future reference, take a look at Help:Link and Wikipedia:Citing sources. Controversy
[edit]If this is not controversial: [1] then I don't know what is such. Any libelous statements under WP:BLP, whether on an article page or a talk page, must be tagged or removed immediately. You are entitled to your opinion, and of course you have more latitude on a talk page, but this is, after all, an encyclopedia, not a blog. Bearian 14:18, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Template Current
[edit]It is not enough that something is in the news to be using the several templates related to {{current}} which include the "-section" and "-related" templates. They are PRIMARILY a notice to editors that many (as in a hundred or more) are editing the page, and if only a few edits a day are occring on the article or page, the template/tags are subject to removal.
If the aim is to get on the "current events" page of wikipedia, then take a look at Wikipedia:How the Current events page works]].
The edit history on the removal of the tag states that the policy on use of the several tags is located at: Template:Current#Guidelines.
The alternative, that many hundreds of thousands of articles have this non-informative template appearing on them is not acceptable, and pointless. Every article relies on some other source, often recent, and often not-so-recent. For example, one article constantly in the news George W. Bush never has this tag on it.

Undue weight

Glenn Greenwald and Joe Klein
[edit]My concerns were similar to that expressed above, namely that the incident seemed out of proportion to its significance to Glenn Greenwald's career and to Joe Klein's especially. The citation issue is just a minor style point, as I do understand it is not Wiki style to refer to other Wiki articles in quite that way. I've read through the materials cited and I am more concerned than ever by the WP:WEIGHT issue here. I see that identical materials were posted in two articles so have amended my comments and also acted to alleviate this serious BLP issue. It is too large for Greenwald too, but in Klein it presents serious BLP concerns, so have reduced significantly the size of the material added there. BLP, as you know, requires that we bend over backwards to do no harm to subjects of biographies, and the "2007 controversy" seems far out of proportion to Klein's career.--Samiharris (talk) 15:31, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Please don't reinstate the possibly BLP-violating language until a second opinion or more has been obtained from the BLP noticeboard. Really, there is no rush here. Let's wait for some more views. Your request for my comments

Re. cold fusion: I'm afraid that enthusiasts have been running over the article here, but the basic summation is that cold fusion is impossible, if by cold fusion you mean fusion in the absence of high-energy particles (which is what the enthusiasts would like to be true). With a small source of high-energy deuterons and a little tritium, you can make a fusion source a few cm long that does release a very little energy - but it all comes out in neutrons. These designs, derived from atomic bomb triggers, are 'cold fusion' in the sense that the bulk of the device is not at high temperature, but there are a lot of high-energy particles flying around. I see, but do you own that image? If you want to use that image on the article youre working on, first you have to upload it here in wikipedia. Afterwhich, make sure you tag the image with the appropriate copyright info. When youre set, you can now add the image to your article. Hope this helps. Inappropriate use of user page space
[edit]I realize you are trying in good faith to find some method of bringing certain content into the encyclopedia, but I do not believe that turning your user page into a POV fork of Joe Klein is an appropriate use of the space. - Isn't that lovely? Now you can use your user page to say something nice about the kind of user you've become. Mine is a poor example and rarely updated. Look at Dismissal of U.S. attorneys controversy and related articles. IMHO, User:Yellowdesk has created a model for how to create a more encyclopedia-looking article out of what began as a series of current events. Yellowdesk's userpage is very functional too. Here's an example of a current event which was developed into a featured article: Stephen Colbert at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. Anyway, love your work. Lamentably, the material on the user page seems to have been transplanted as an article, Joe Klein's 21st November 2007 Time magazine column, a blatant POV fork now justifiably nominated for deletion. This is an even worse use of the material than the user page. Rather than waste your time using this voluminous material where it does not belong, you really should work on getting it into a proper political or journalistic magazine.--Samiharris (talk) 16:32, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

So you've experienced your first AfD (and lost)
[edit]Good for you. You survived. In fact, User:Nbahn is unchanged in any way. You didn't throw a tantrum, or threaten to leave. You asked somebody for assistance and guidance. You haven't even really gotten testy with anybody. You are now a wiser and more careful editor. You've engaged in a meaningful way with several vastly experienced editors, and stood your own. Now what?
- Keep maintaining the pages you now watch. If your work is important to you, defend it against vandalism.
- Read other folks' articles. Find out what does work. Read some recent featured articles.
- Try editing in pagespace that relates to the subject matter you've covered. Expand your watchlist.
- Trim the work on your user subpage until it looks like an encyclopedia article, then repost it under a better name, or more likely as a section under another more embracing page name (Stengel, Klein, Painton). Don't get in a hurry on this. The more distance you put between now and then, the better perspective you'll have on exactly what inside your accumulation is encyclopedic.
But don't give up. And don't forget you still have this important work to do. All this is just one user's opinion, I'll grant, but I (and now others) have seen you bring something to the wikitable. Henceforth, I'll refrain from offering unsolicited advice, because I'm satisfied you can handle yourself without any additional help. If you ever do need help, remember to ask somebody. If you honestly believe this belongs on the pedia, then you'll have to earn the privilege (with one strike against you: the successful afd). Remember that a successful article isn't just a collection of minutia. A good article explains itself well, has a solid basis in notability, and stands the test of 1000 paper cuts (the edits of others). As is, you're not there. Again, read articles based on events. My replies were rapid and pathetic: But he did this, and he did that, and he did the other thing. "But why should I care about any of that?" the professor begged. He made me feel bad for not making a better case. And this was like that for you. The AfD was screaming: "But how does all this worthy detail make the whole thing an encyclopedia article?" Minutia is important, but explaining the entire subject and giving perspective and proper weight is far more important than a listing of links from which the reader could decode the very points you're trying valiantly to make. - Re: screaming - I thought it strange at the time, but the guy was at wit's end trying to get me to understand the entire purpose of the study of history, he could see I was right at the edge of making that discovery, and he hoped his extreme passion might get me there. It did. Years later. Outcome: He's the only one of my former professors I stay in touch with, consider a friend. The story I was trying to tell then has become my life's avocation. Might end up with a PhD over it.

You asked for advice this time
[edit]Sorry it took me so long to formulate what is going to seem a very basic and simple solution to your desire to say something significant on the subject of Joe Klein. If I understand your premise, the subject misled the public. The subject is a Living Person, so you can't just write what you want. You must take a neutral stance and approach the subject as an encyclopedian. So I'd say: Let's make Joe Klein a featured article. Let that settle in your mind a bit before you take ANY action. Let's not bash the guy. That wouldn't be a good idea anyway. Exposing the guy through his own actions and writing? That's fair game, so long as the rules are obeyed. And since Wikipedia is not a tabloid, if you were actually successful in getting Klein's page to FA, it would be a mighty and perhaps worthy achievement to say something profound during this year's insubstantial insider political punditry. You'd find it difficult and contentious, but you'd sleep well at night. That's my advice. And I'd help. I suspect you'd find a few others already working in the content area. [edit]As long as you continue to sling big elbows and telegraph your punches (wikipedia is the one place I find where both tendencies are rewarded), it looks like you'll do fine. Nice work on a tricky subject. If you stay in a pagespace, usually someone more knowledgeable (or motivated) comes along and becomes an ally for getting the space up to A or GA class. What actually happened (and is documented in multiple books and TV shows) is that Slobodan Milosevic, proposed to Constantine Mitsotakis to partition the Republic. Mitsotakis denied and replied to Milosevic that "Greece is a European country and we cannot even think of such things" and that "the last thing we want is to have these people back into our own territory". Based on your link, I suspect what you wanted to do was not merely welcome, but also express some caution. I personally like to {{subst:welcome}}~~~~ a bunch of folks, but keep it simple, using the template I installed on this page with my tildes. In case like the one you were seeing on Saturday, I'd suggest using warning templates, which are actually really handy to use. The first-level warnings read very much like welcome statements. Location change (and reservations made) for DC meetup
[edit]We originally picked TGI Friday's in Foggy Bottom as the meetup location, however I stopped by TGI Friday's this evening to make reservations. I was less than impressed. They apparently don't take reservations, except perhaps if you call 24 hours ahead of time. The staff was not so helpful, and the menu has hardly anything vegetarian which is an issue for some people.
So, I checked out the Bertucci's pizza/Italian place across the street (21st & I St NW). Their staff couldn't have been more helpful, think it will be fairly quiet so we will be able to hear each other, and is a very suitable place for us. Just a friendly reminder, WP:AGF applies to IPs too. The IP that edited Incarceration in the United States has little or no history of vandalism; I believe he/she was mistaken, but not acting in bad faith (see my reply on the talk page for more details). Please try and avoid biting newcomers and intermittent editors who have not demonstrated bad faith. - Ouch. I take your point. I would, however, like to elaborate as to what my thinking was at the time I typed all of that out. It seemed to me (as it still does, mind you) that the stated reason was way too risible; I was not — and still am not — able to take such an argument at face value. Presumably, the journalist in question lives in Cuba; I would argue that it's who publishes him that determines ipso facto his notability, not his country of residence. So when I considered potential ulterior motives, I (perhaps all too naturally) developed a number of ugly possibilities. I was considering the likelihood of these various possibilities (being under their influence, as it were) while I was typing, and I suppose that it shows. Another possibility that I was considering in the back of my mind while typing was that it seemed to me that the odds were slim to none that the IP editor would actually check up on the history of the article; so I made a semi-conscious decision to try to get his (or "her"!) attention. I — very obviously — got yours instead. I would very much like to know if he truly believes in the tripe that he served up as a rationale; and if he does truly believe in it, then I would also like to know what his exact reasoning is. - An understandable response; I've had to check myself on other articles occasionally after involvement in Balkans related discussions. They tend to (not unreasonably) spike my sensitivity to bad faith. I still try to avoid jumping to the bad faith assumption. It's not just a matter of civility, it's in my own interest. I've seen editors accused of bad faith react by lashing out blindly; it leads to edit wars, and sometimes vandalism. When approached in a more friendly manner, they tend to be much more reasonable. I'm not excusing their response to a bad faith assumption, but if you can avoid unnecessarily antagonizing them, it's much better all around. —ShadowRanger (talk|stalk) 21:11, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit]There is generally not much encyclopedic value in what we call a "gallery" (a collection of multiple images of a given person); and if the images are not public-domain, then having a whole gallery of them violates the fair-use principle. This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.
Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition
[edit]Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.
The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.

An exciting month of wiki events!
[edit]Hello there,
I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.
First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.
On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

- On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July
[edit]I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon
[edit]The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.
If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.
When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Museum hacks and museum edits

Upcoming events:
- February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
- February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
- February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".
I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more!

Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.
First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).
Now, I am very pleased to announce:
- Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
- Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
- Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
- Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.
There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. February events and meetups in DC
[edit]Greetings from Wikimedia DC!
February is shaping up to be a record-breaking month for us, with nine scheduled edit-a-thons and several other events:
- On Friday, February 12, NPR will host a Black History Month First Edit event.
- On Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, we're working with the Wiki Education Foundation to hold a series of four edit-a-thons at the AAAS 2016 Annual Meeting.
- On Tuesday, February 16, we're holding the Smithsonian American Art Museum and American University WikiWorkshop with Professor Andrew Lih's class.
- On Saturday, February 20, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will host the African American Artists Edit-a-Thon.
- On Friday, February 26, Howard University will host its second annual Black History Month Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, February 27, we have three different events. In the morning, we're holding an Accessibility Edit-a-Thon at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. In the afternoon, we'll host our second February WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle, followed by our monthly dinner meetup at Vapiano.
We hope to see you at one—or all—of these events!

March events and meetups in DC

Looking for something to do in DC in March? We have a series of great events planned for the month:
- On Wednesday, March 9, we'll host our first March WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle.
- On Friday, March 11, the National Archives will host the Women in the Civil War Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, March 19, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian will host the Color History with the Smithsonian! event, and we'll hold our second Accessibility Edit-a-Thon at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.
- On Sunday, March 20, the American Chemical Society will host the Computers in Chemistry Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, March 26, we'll host our second March WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle, followed by our monthly dinner meetup at Vapiano.
