I see you're in the process of editing the very article I came to see today Masanobu Fukuoka. I had no plans to edit that just now, but I'm glad to see you're improving it. I'll check back in due course to reread it. --Dvortygirl (talk) 23:50, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome; Thanks Dvortygirl. Please give me feedback on the present page. Australian plants identification...

[edit]

Plants from Sydney region further south, as far as greater Melbourne, or some from rainforests anywhere all the way up the east coast, i'm happy to use my identification skills by attempting proper identification of them—making more than my previous passing ID comments—preferably by email, or if necessary, here on my talk page. Home base for me: forested black–soil river–flats in the coast range mountains, far east Gippsland, about 80k's(?) as the crow flies from the E coast (Eden). My work, in GIS mostly for $s, and in field–based ecology, ecological restoration and nature farming—all sometimes when working away from the nature farm, in governments (rarely companies) in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Newcastle, etc.

Cool, nice banksias down your way including new species Banksia croajingolensis and some nice cunninghamii etc. I'v been madly taking photos of anything I see in flower - be great to get some E. gippsland stuff. Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:36, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, for what is for me, the reminder about Banksia croajingolensis – Molyneux's description work, along with all the new, recently described, and at least one still undescribed, Callistemons, also around my district.--macropneuma 01:43, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The other plant I'd be keen on pics from around your way is Persoonia levis which is at its southernmost limits, to compare with my photos from up this way in Sydney. Also the Banksia cunninghamii too Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:32, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm terribly sorry for my linking the article to the talk page. I intended to remove the link as early as possible as I stated in the talk page "I temporarily link the source Shrigley provided." Anyway, it is my fault. I apologize for my mistake and greatly appreciate your sending the link to me. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 20:22, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Citations

[edit]

Re your edit summary here. I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, so tell me if this is what you meant, in a nutshell:

Should we use the citation styles suggested by the sources (websites), or should we have a (standardized) template and use our own (Wikipedia's) citation style?

If this is what you are asking, I am happy to comply with either. How I've been doing it is to get as much information about a page that I can and include such info in the ref. If I find a citation sub-page for a website (some don't have one), I try to abide rather closely to it, sometimes, however, including even more info than they themselves give (for instance, I might include "|location = Canberra" if the page is from the University of Canberra, etc.).

If you meant something else, please let me know. Thanks, Hamamelis (talk) 07:01, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, of the more general question you have answered above, the very particular pedantic aspect is as follows.
For NSW PlantNet do we use the current date (our accessdate) as the PlantNet cite advice page advises us to or do we use the date on the PlantNet page for the taxon (frequently available as the "taxon concept" date or more rarely as the page update date). Beyond mere pedantry it is useful to me to know how up to date is a taxon page of PlantNet—i know some are very out of date and i know people are working hard on it all. The full text database is available online, sometimes if in a bind i check the database record for that taxon’s page’s last update. ——--macropneuma 07:15, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For GRIN, for instance, I regularly use my own template (below in green), which includes both a parameter for accessdate, as well as a parameter for date (which could mean when the page was "verified" or the date it was "last updated". The latter is used where present, the former where the latter isn't present). (see examples of these, as an arbitrary example, at GRIN's page for Triticum zhukovskyi.)

I'm using the Google Chrome browser. In the past, when I couldn't find a date on the page, I've tried to find it by going to "view page source", "view page info", and "inspect element", but gave up because I could never find it. I haven't tried that for every website, but that is because I got frustrated in never being able to turn it up. Is one of these what you mean by 'database record'? Hamamelis (talk) 07:46, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The PlantNet monster text database, main part, beware 10.5MB: plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/PlantNet/NSWflora/etaxon.txt . On and off for years for work in NSW governments, i have been using this NSW textual database, the (NSW plants) database. It is not public and not not public (really and necessarily in the grey area). Be careful, it is huge, copyright and the data basis of PlantNet. ——--macropneuma 08:09, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks for the warning, I'll do my best to avoid COPYVIO! Hamamelis (talk) 08:17, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you use it privately at all, then only use it privately—for private reseacrh and learning only, otherwise get a job in NSW government! (i don’t work there at the moment but could if i moved back to NSW) ——--macropneuma 08:41, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wet Tropics of Queensland

[edit]

So you had some ideas, I assume with regards to how the article can expand? Why don't you reply here with the key topic areas you think are lacking. I can then spend some time to see what I find about that and add some content, then you follow up with your contributions. Does that sound reasonable and fit in with your thinking? That might push the article to C class. Then we can work towards meeting WP:BCLASS criteria. - Shiftchange (talk) 22:57, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure!, we can have some dialogue here. Let's toss our ideas around and see what we can mutually come up with for improvements, not necessarily only expansions but mostly so. Currently I am living based in Cairns in the Wet Tropics, spending some time in the forest, some occasional time in the Herbarium in James Cook University and so on. ——--macropneuma 23:19, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dysoxylum

[edit]

You may like to see and use this [1] as it examines the cultural and religious aspect of the plant Dysoxylum malabaricum in Kerala.--Nvvchar. 10:07, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since this article can not be expanded to 5x for DYK why not we start on these two Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary (in my native state of Karnataka in India) and Dysoxylum malabaricum for a single hook dyk, if you care to join me?--Nvvchar. 08:10, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Let’s join work forces for both Dysoxylum densiflorum and Dysoxylum malabaricum. I have well honed templates for creating stub plant species articles and we can fill the articles out from there as we find the best quality reliable sources. A D. malabaricum article stub is ready for the first creation edit step.
Most of all I’m really looking for a 'Flora of India' (must better and more up to date than the, ancient, damnably colonialist, 1800s British Flora of India) or Flora publications of each state of India—formal, scholarly standard, quality reliable sources, per WP policies. Do they exist?
We are rolling along OK, not too badly, so far.——--macropneuma 11:14, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For example, just now i did find this citation to an old state (?) Flora, but not as old as 1800s British Flora … :
 • Kanjilal U.N., Kanjilal, P.C., Das, A., De R.N. and Bora N.L., (1934-1940). Flora of Assam. Vols. 1–5, Government Press, Shillong, India
More references to more up to date State Floras, and some of them available in digital form, or alternative national online flora info systems, are what we need to do really well creating Indian Dysoxylum species articles. ——--macropneuma 12:53, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, just now, this (colonialist too, though more recent, and i found still used in a 2006 Western Ghats floristics study):
 • Gamble, J. S., and C. E. C. Fischer (1915–1935) Flora of the presidency of Madras Parts I to XI. Secretary of State for India, London.
Please, are these digitised, in any form, that i can access? :

Referencing

[edit]

I didn't want to mess around extensively with your references, but are you familiar with Template:Sfn? It sort of automagically handles harvids; if I put or one of the cite x templates in my bibliography and fill out the last1, first1, etc. and year parameters properly, I can just type and get "Smith & Jones (2004), p. 38" in my reflist with a hyperlink to the corresponding entry in the bibliography below. (See Asplenium pinnatifidum, for instance, for an article I wrote using the system.) It might save you a lot of tedious markup. Choess (talk) 04:47, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeh, actually i am very familiar with Sfn and Sfnp, that is the reason i didn’t use them in circumstances where they’re inappropriate. Where appropriate i have used manually written anchor–html page–hyperlinks; and where appropriate both manually written anchor–html page–hyperlinks and Sfn/Sfnp. These latter pages having both may be encountered in some plant genus pages i worked on which have a simpler kind of hard copy book pages citations, but are not appropriate for the hundreds of links to pages within plant database websites, as the Sfn/Sfnp simpler templates do not provide all the features that i’ve manually coded. Last year i did a big study of every one of these citation and associated templates, weighing up all of their pros and cons, before doing some of my major page creations and edits. Thanks for your encouragement. There’s no tedium because i have a system down pat that uses 'editing text templates' of these WP templates, with efficient copy and paste and find and replace. --macropneuma 05:02, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would love to have time to create a much more fully featured Sfn++… template (itself), than any of those currently here available, but alas i do not have that time at present. --macropneuma 05:09, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your citation edits

[edit]

I just want to say a big thanks for all your painstaking work on cleaning up the TFSS citations in my articles (and your other edits). I had initially gone back and used your expanded citation format in articles without getting the correct contributor. I've since corrected ones you didn't get to, so I should now have caught all the ones I've created. Declangi (talk) 10:06, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You’re welcome to my assistance with them. Aah good news—all of them done!(?) I enjoyed the little bit of collaborating. Perhaps we may again sometime. --macropneuma 10:37, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My count of sets of edits is about 50 species articles, in Thymelaeaceae, Apocynaceae and some of my own origin in Helicia & Heliciopsis species articles, in Proteaceae. Must’ve been many more for you. i felt for your editing plight up against that mass. --macropneuma 10:47, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gutta-percha

[edit]

Hi there, I agree with your comment that Gutta-percha should rightly be split into two articles, with Palaquium being the main one. As you say, Gutta-percha pertains to just a few species of the genus. I think our initial step should be to have the Palaquium redirect deleted to allow a more focused Palaquium article to be factored from the current Gutta-percha text. I'm happy to add this to the Redirects for discussion page, along with placing the tags on the article and redirect creator's pages. Declan Declangi (talk) 01:39, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Okay.
Clarifying, in case something different was meant by that sentence above, we only need to delete the redirection coding "#redirect Gutta-percha" on the Palaquium page and then edit the page to add at least a stub article on the whole genus; to be sure, we’ve no need to "delete" that Palaquium page.
I think the evidence is strong enough in this case, in accord with WP policies, that we can simply go ahead and do that. The Gutta-percha page creator, a Minneapolis, MN, USA IP address with only this single 2003 small creation edit, at that time only created a bare text blurb about the substance and the 'English imperialistic triumphalist claims of discovery and achievement' of using it for a claimed first undersea cable, without any mention of the source from a few spp. of Palaquium, etc., etc.. Obviously and of larger note, the people in the tropical countries–of–origin of Gutta-percha knew about it before the 'empire' appropriated their knowledge for this, little notable, industrial cable so called 'first' use. As a courtesy, anyway, notify, perhaps this IP address Gutta-percha article creator, and more seriously, the more active, much more widely involved than plant articles, birder, redirect creator. In cases of similar strong evidence and reasoning, and such subject–shift problems as the present Gutta-percha article, i have done this kind of editing before, and don’t know if discussion at the Redirects for discussion page will do any more than unnecessarily complicate the process of getting on with editing. A process, which in this case, i see as very well reasoned, evidenced and fairly straightforward. --Macropneuma 02:24, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully, User:MPF will want to collaborate, too.--Macropneuma 02:56, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, I now understand there's no need to RfD expanding this kind of redirect into an article. I've gone ahead and created an initial Palaquium article, but as the sources in gutta-percha are a bit unclear, I've instead used some of my (and your) usual sources. The species list etc. can use some considerable expanding. Will let User:MPF know of this change thus far and then maybe strip out some now-duplicate content from gutta-percha. Declan Declangi (talk) 08:53, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! Will have a look at it in a moment, and see if i can get to work on it too! --Macropneuma 08:56, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Already looking a really good stub!
I’m happy to do my usual database techniques to expand the species list to a ± full one, however part of that is that i’ll wait for The Plant List to hopefully fix the many errors they have, by means of their update (using 2012 data) to the 2013? version 1.1, quote "shortly" (it has said "shortly" for at least the last few months); Authoritative scholarly sources clarify The Plant List as not having met the 2010 targets of its role as a, listing–website, aggregator of sources of current accepted names of plants (as part of the global (plant) biodiversity information system) and that those targets have officially now been put back to 2020. Is there anyone who knows when the "shortly" (weasel words) 1.1 update will be? --Macropneuma 01:22, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:20, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
