Radiesthesia (pseudoscience) moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Radiesthesia (pseudoscience), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Recent edit reversion

[edit]

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.

I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) If you think my edit was mistaken, please politely let me know and I will investigate. S Philbrick(Talk) 11:58, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free files in lists

[edit]

Greetings. I've just removed 42 non-free files from Armorial of schools in England. Please be aware of WP:NFLISTS. We do not generally allow an article of this type to have non-free files used in this way. Your addition of these images resulted in this article using more non-free content than any other article on the entire project of over 6 million articles but one. We do not use non-free imagery in this way. I'll be making a similar removal at Armorial of British universities, as the additions of non-free files there made it the 3rd highest article in terms of non-free image use.

Also, while I appreciate your attempt to comply with WP:NFCC #10c in adding rationales for use such as you did here, a purpose of use that is "Logo is used for illustration" is insufficient. If the only requirement that we had for using non-free files here is that we are using them for illustration, there would be absolutely no limitation on the use of non-free images.

I'm sorry to undo your work, but this is a necessary thing. If you have questions about this, let me know. Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 12:49, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. Not unsurprisingly I disagree with your interpreation of WP:NFLISTS. Rather than a 1:1 exchange on this I have made my comments on the talk pages of both articles/lists. I think this would be the best place to reach a consensus amongst editors on this subject. regards Hjamesberglen (talk) 10:40, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:Brockenhurst College coat of arms.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused, superseded by File:Coat of Arms of Brockenhurst College.svg.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 10:49, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw you made some changes to some private school articles. I agree the terminology is extremely confusing, but I am concerned that the changes obscure a bit the fact the schools are private. For example, for Rossall School, the intro says: Rossall School is a public school (English fee-charging boarding and day school) for 0–18 year olds, between Cleveleys and Fleetwood, Lancashire. For a readers from outside the UK, a public school is a state school, so it is not immediately clear that the school in question is actually private. It does say it is fee-charging, but I don't think that is clear enough (in some countries state schools charge small fees for uniforms, books, etc.). I think it would be more clear to specify the schools are private. What do you think? Vpab15 (talk) 14:16, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Agree this is not an easy subject. Over the years there have been many debates in Wikipedia between public, private and independent. With the latest change, in general from 'independent' to 'private' I think we have got more or less to right place. This is my thinking now
- articles are written in British English so it is a very clear WP convention that 'public school' in the English context is valid. Also overwhelmingly there is a hyperlink to the Public School (United Kingdom) article
- the State School and indeed the Private school articles both have a note explaining the English usage
- the archetypical public schools have been described as such for hundreds of years, during such time private schools were usually prep schools or smaller institutions in private ownership
Based on the above I prefer use the term Public School (with a description of fee-charging) for the relatively small group (maybe circa 50) schools which for most of their lives have been considered 'public' and never 'private'. Hjamesberglen (talk) 14:41, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I mostly agree with what you say. But per MOS:COMMONALITY we should use terms that are global, rather than the those specific to one country only. Based on that, what do you think about replacing "fee-paying" with "private", while keeping the reference to "public school" as it is now? Vpab15 (talk) 14:57, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can't say I agree for the reasons outlined. To me Eton, Harrow, Winchester etc are public schools hence trying to avoid using the term 'private' in the lede. The term 'private school' now sits in the infobox though under school description and that's OK. My view clearly is to avoid the term in the lede for this small sub-set of schools. I am not going to edit war on this though. Hjamesberglen (talk) 15:36, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Tower Hamlets Town Hall, without good reason. They should have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Belbury (talk) 19:48, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rather patronising I think. The town hall has moved hence renaming the article to former. I am trying to be helpful here but I am not going to sweat over this. If you prefer inaccurate information, so be it. Hjamesberglen (talk) 19:51, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies, that's just a generic template about moving articles around.
Appreciate the intention, but Wikipedia generally doesn't put "former" on the front of titles when an organisation moves premises. It'd make more sense to either rewrite the article to be about Tower Hamlets Town Hall as a concept, listing both old and new locations, or - if Mulberry Place is a standalone significant building - renaming that article to Mulberry Place and rewriting accordingly.
I'm not sure which of those two is more appropriate in this instance, I'll start a talk page thread about it. Belbury (talk) 19:57, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks and I appreciate your advice of use of 'former'. The Tower Hamlets Town Hall article will need then to be updated to desctibe the new HQ. I think. There is an article Whitechapel Civic Centre which may be the start point, although both the official and 'commonplace' name is Tower Hamlets Town Hall. WIthout getting into too much detail there was also a previous town hall. I'll check the talk page.Hjamesberglen (talk) 20:09, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Belbury, you were ahead of me! Referencing 'Whitechapel...' in the hatnote now makes the article 'whole' again.Hjamesberglen (talk) 20:13, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I started the Shakespeare coat of arms article, so I got a notification when you linked it. I considered mentioning it in "my" article, but your source looks a little too WP:SPS to me. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:05, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't disagree. This interesting linkage to Shakespeare is not something to lie in the tracks for, but who knows what went through the head of the people who drew up the arms. A tag has been placed on File:Logo sponne school.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 03:23, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
