George Black, and redirects

[edit]

This page has nothing to do with redirects. And a redirect needs no discussion, you may want to read WP:AFD specifically "Consider making the page a useful redirect or proposing it be merged rather than deleted. Neither of these actions requires an AfD", making a redirect is simply being bold. The page has no sources, had been a stub for over a year, and does not assert notability. By making a redirect I was preserving the page history, I could have PROD-ed it, but I didn't. But if it is still a stub in a year then I may PROD it, as it stands you may want to back up the assertion that he was "important" rather than second guessing a redirect I made four months ago. Speedy deletion of Bennett Smith

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Bennett Smith requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. --The Firewall 11:21, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Saving Bennett Smith

[edit]

Hello! I removed the Speedy Delete tag on your article about Bennett Smith, as it appears notability is confirmable. But I may recommend that you clean up the article with proper referencing in order to avoid any further attempts to have it removed. Thank you for bringing this article to Wikipedia, and keep up the fine work! Ecoleetage (talk) 12:33, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You've done some amazing work with List of Prince Edward Island General Assemblies, among others like it. I'm trying to build lists like this for the other provinces of Canada; I'm currently working on the one for Newfoundland and Labrador. I've found this, but it only lists general assemblies from 1848 to 1867—could you perhaps point me in the direction where I could find more dates for the province? Thanks in advance! Gary King (talk) 22:21, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thanks, I will check those out. I'm looking for them because I'm currently working on List of premiers of Prince Edward Island and the same type of lists for the other provinces, and they would greatly benefit with the exact date of each assembly rather than just a year. Gary King (talk) 14:21, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but unfortunately it doesn't have any exact dates, especially for the earlier Premiers, which is what I'm looking for at the moment. Luckily, after some searching, I've managed to find nearly all of the exact dates for List of premiers of Newfoundland and Labrador. Gary King (talk) 15:07, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now that I've gotten the dates, I'm currently looking for the missing assemblies and election information. I've gone through the links you've provided and a few other resources but what I've found is up on that page right now. Would you happen to know where to get this information? Thanks in advance! Gary King (talk) 04:14, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I've already gotten those. Those were the easier ones; I'm finding it difficult to get anything for when Newfoundland was led by Colonial and Dominion Prime Ministers. Gary King (talk) 16:00, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers, thanks, I will take a look. Gary King (talk) 16:36, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Date of Birth of William Baffin

[edit]

Hi BigIron. Can you tell me why you restored the supposed year of birth (1584) for William Baffin after I had deleted it? You may have missed the note I added about this on the Discussion page, so if so I repeat it again here:

YEAR OF BIRTH: I removed 1584 as the year of birth, since there is absolutely no documentary evidence to support it (see Markham's edition of all documents relating to Baffin, Hakluyt Society, 1881). No documents have come to light since then to provide new information. The 1584 date originates in Britannica 11th edition, but the author gives no source and the date is clearly an extrapolation on the age a pilot is likely to have reached by the time he's entrusted with certain level of responsibility. But it could easily be 10 or 15 years out -- really not good enough to even warrant a "circa" designation. It's simply a guess. (The author of the Baffin article in the new Dictionary of National Biography, Wayne Davies, has confirmed to me by email that he had no other source for repeating the date in his article but Britannica, and he agreed it had no documentary basis.)

I am removing the year of birth for what will be the third time. Unless you have some new documentary evidence to present on Baffin's birth (in which case, please let us have the details) please do not restore it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.171.182.14 (talk) 14:41, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am replying here since your comment was unsigned and has been attributed to an anonymous user. As far as I can see, the only two changes that I have made to that article recently are:
so, I believe that you are mistaken; I don't recall adding a date of birth to this article. --Big_iron (talk) 20:59, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

George Benson Hall, Jr.

[edit]

Hi. Why was George Benson Hall, Jr. notable? Neither George Benson Hall nor George Benson (disambiguation) say anything other than that Jr. was the son of "senior"; being someone's son is not a criterion for notability. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 10:51, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Prince Edward Island/Nova Scotia (Speakers)

[edit]

I'm wondering if you could help me with something? I've tried to compile a list of Speakers of PEI's colonial House of Assembly at (see Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island) but I have a few gaps - the period from 1789 to 1806 and the period from 1867 until 1873 when the colony became a province. I see you put together the lists of General Assemblies of PEI and wonder if you might have the information I'm seeking? Thanks. Dodge rambler (talk) 18:38, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also working on a list of Nova Scotia Speakers at Speaker of the House of Assembly of Nova Scotia and I'm a) unsure if William Cottnam Tonge was Speaker in the 9th General Assembly of Nova Scotia (1806-1811) b) don't know who the Speaker from 1970 to 1978.

If you know any of this information I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks. Dodge rambler (talk) 18:45, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure for the entire time period, but Vince MacLean was Speaker for two years following his election in 1974. Cmr08 (talk) 03:02, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador

[edit]

Since you wrote on my talk page about helping other wikipedians, I was hoping you could take a look at an article I edited. I have been editing for over a year, but still haven't been able to master the ins and outs, which is why I could use your help. The article is Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. Some background,User:JAKoulouris has been adding info about some crater on mars being named after Gander. He is using an interview that he gave as part of the article, and is adding links to every news article he can find that mentioned his interview. He now has over 20 external links, all of which contain the same article. I have already removed some, but he put them back in. He also appears to be in a conflict of interest, as he put his own name into the article. I guess what I really want to know is if the edits are legit, I don't want to get in an edit war with him. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 06:32, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice Big Iron. I find it really has a negative impact on an article when it contains a long list of external links that shouldn't be included to begin with. I have been trying to clean these lists up, but some editors will add anything they feel like without even bothering to check the policy to see if it belongs in the article. Once again, thanks. Charles Dewey Day

[edit]

Hi, (I took your name from the History of the article on Charles Dewey Day)

I would like to write and publish an article on Charles Dewey Day in the French Wikipédia. At present, there is nothing in French on this important man.

A few words about me. I have been a professional translator for many years and would feel competent to translate the English article published here. BUT, this is not quite the content I had in mind... I am also a law graduate from McGill (Chancellor Day Hall). At some point during those 3 years (I don't remember what year it was, it's been 40+ years since I left McGill), I did a research for Professor J. E. C. Brierley on the particular contribution of Charles Dewey Day to the Lower Canada Civil Code of 1866. What did he bring in this effort. I still have this paper. Later on after I graduated, I worked as a research assistant for the Quebec Civil Code Revision (which became law in 1994).

I am now a regular contributor to Wikipédia (French) and I recently came up with this idea of doing something on Charles Dewey Day and the 1866 codification. And then, I discovered the article in the English Wikipedia. You can find my Wiki profile here: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilisateur:Minoumi

Now, my questions to you are as follows:

1. Can I proceed with my project, from scratch, but take a few facts from the English article. From scratch, I mean that my point of view would be different that the broad one adopted in the English article. Mine would be C. D. Day as one of the three authors of the Lower Canada Civil Code. Not mainly as a politician.

2. Would it be ok for me to cite the English article as a source. A general source.

3. OR (that'a a different option from the above), could I simply do a strait translation of the English article and add/integrate a few paragraphs on Day's contribution to the 1866 Civil Code?

I'm not familiar at all with Wikipedia's policies on translations. Can you give me some guidance? Thanks. --Minoumi (talk) 01:01, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Big iron, thanks for your advices. I will keep you posted. I have a good working relationship with Riba. --Minoumi (talk) 15:33, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Big iron, I just published my article on Charles Dewey Day (in French Wikipedia). You will notice that it is quite different from the English version. The structure is different, I have added more content from my sources and, as indicated earlier, insisted much more on Day's contribution to the 1866 codification of the Civil Code of Lower Canada. Which was my main objective. I knew Charles Dewey Day from my McGill Law School days... Cheers and thanks for your help. --Minoumi (talk) 16:36, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable person

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 19:00, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect error

[edit]

Kudos for the years of hard work. At John McCormick (disambiguation) you drafted in Jan 2009, I caught an error for John Rockefeller McCormick; the link redirects to his mother since he died in childhood, and you'd used her lifespan as his - I added more detail, but I'm not sure if I should have delinked him and linked his mother, or if my amended citation is sufficient heads up for the reader; I noted you're now using a fulldash, so I replaced the ndashes, though I've often left them if they're already in place. [edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:WesternMeadowlark23.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided),authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which:{{subst:usernameexpand|Big iron/archive 3}} will produce an appropriate expansion,

or the {{own}} template..
