Bezuidenhout

[edit]

Hi there,

I created Dawid Bezuidenhout and noticed that your surnames are the same. What is the meaning of it? Is it usually associated with Coloured people?--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 21:59, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info! I recently spent 4 months in South Africa and Namibia and lots of experience with Afrikaans, but never came across the surname.--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 13:56, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question about banned usernames

[edit]

Hi, I was trying to edit some articles on the Afrikaans Wikipedia, but I could not register my username because anything containing the word JEW is banned. Do you have any idea why? Thanks a lot. --JewBask (talk) 23:08, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again; thanks for your prompt response. I thought about the same. Please let me know if you find something out, I am really interested in giving my two cents to the Afrikaans Wikipedia and hence help spread knowledge in the language. RE: Vandalism on Goiás

[edit]

I restored the pre-vandalism data. I didn't revert it because I didn't want to lose intermediate edits. If it's something like that, you always have the option to manually correct it. In this case, I looked at the edit history and compared the last edit of the vandal to the prior, non-vandalized version to make sure I identified all data that had been vandalized. Then I literally copied the original data and pasted it over the vandalized data in the current version of the article. ClueBot has a pretty strict criteria to avoid false positives so there are a lot of situations where it will not revert vandalism. It's not always a case of "missing" it. For example, ClueBot won't revert edits by a specific user to a specific article more than once in a given day (I assume to avoid an automated revert war). Keep in mind, those are ClueBot's rules. You are not bound by the same rules (though revert wars are still not allowed, see Wikipedia:3RR). But in the case of vandalism, there is nothing special about fixing repeated vandalism. You may fix it the second time the same way you fixed it the first time. If vandalism persists from a specific user or IP address, warn the user on their user talk page, following the format for warnings outlined in Wikipedia:Template_messages/User_talk_namespace. If they persist after several warnings, and it is obvious that they are vandalizing and that their edits are not in good faith, ask for administrator assistance in Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. They will be able to temporarily or permanently block a user or IP address from editing after repeated vandalism. DanielDeibler (talk) 01:27, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Taking liberties"

[edit]

I'm not entirely sure why you consider changing the grammar of an article introduction to be "taking liberties". [1]. See Wikipedia:OWN. Park3r (talk) 16:04, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It feels like you are gradually aiming to ignore the use of the original name in the article completely. The earlier on the name is, I personally think, the more people assume it's used. First you started out moving the article to it's new name (Pietersburg >> Polokwane etc.) then you moved the or in the middle (Polokwane or Pietersburg >> Polokwane, or by it's former name Pietersburg) and now you plan on moving the entire name right to the end. I admit I am being slightly aggressive and exaggerating, and I ask your pardon for this. Bezuidenhout (talk) 17:50, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The wording of the intro seemed unwieldy. I have no agenda regarding name changes, and a review of Talk:City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality will show this quite clearly. Park3r (talk) 20:23, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the Tshwane + municipality name change by the way. :) Bezuidenhout (talk) 20:25, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Commercially viable land and apartheid

[edit]

I see that you challenged the fact that nearly all commercially viable land was transferred to White ownership in Namibia during apartheid. Do you really question this or are you just being difficult?--TM 10:43, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am questioning it, because I doubt that all agricultural land was simply 'taken' away from them. If they were then how the hell did black people survive without the food? Bezuidenhout (talk) 12:55, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For example http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=44666 states that only 52% of land was in white hands in 1990. Bezuidenhout (talk) 12:59, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The operative words are "nearly all" and "commercially viable". Looking at land reform in Namibia, an academic essay by Chris Tapscott, says "74% of the potentially arable land was owned by less than 4,100 people, mainly white, commercial farmers who comprised less than 0.2% of the total population." I'd say that 74% qualifies as nearly.--TM 13:34, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But these figures could represent new farmland created to the help of irrigation and dams. Let's face it, before europeans came along there was little technology, it's not as if the white people 'took over' their dams and farmland. Bezuidenhout (talk) 13:42, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And I disagree that 74% is 'nearly all'. Are you saying nearly all of the USA is white? After all 74 or somewhat is white? Bezuidenhout (talk) 13:44, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will leave aside your comments on "new farmland". We can say it more directly: "0.2% of the populations, almost all of whom were White, controlled 74% of the commercially viable land for agriculture."--TM 13:49, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Get your facts straigt, TM. This land became commercially viable AFTER this section of the population put it to economic use. SWA/Namibia is a low rainfall country with more rain in the NORTH EAST of the country, which is mainly owned by Blacks. --41.151.106.109 (talk) 21:38, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

# of Afrikaan Speakers

[edit]

Very interesting contribution at Talk:Afrikaans. I'm not sure how this fits into your idea about a higher # of Afrikaans speakers but I just wanted to share a personal tidbit with you. I left Belgium in 1951, at 4 yrs old, when my parents emigrated to the USA. We continued to speak our dialect of Flemish (SW of Antwerp) and I am relatively fluent in it till this day. We did NOT alter our speaking to each other, or to our relatives in Belgium, because of the Belgian Language shifts of the '60s toward a more Dutch influence (ABN). Our "language" basically stayed in the time envelope of the mid-20th century. The result (as I just recently discovered) is that I can read Afrikaans with very little dificulty whereas Dutch is quite a problem. I would much enjoy a further discussion about this. E-mail?. Changes to Cape Town data

[edit]

Maybe you should look stuff up or at least start a talk instead of randomly reverting changes, how about that? The census data for "Cape Town" is confusing because it has "Cape Town proper" which is the historical division and "Cape Town", which is the current boundary of the city. I fixed it to reflect the whole city instead of some part of the city, which is really only historical at this point.

Cheers, fijal — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fijal (talkcontribs) 14:35, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, this is confusing, but... The entire article talks more about City of Cape Town Municipality than Cape Town as described in census, it is very confusing (can you find some reference as what exactly is the administrative division? I don't think "Cape Town" as described in the article even exists). Especially stuff like "list of suburbs" contains tons of suburbs that are NOT part of what the article describes — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fijal (talkcontribs) 14:44, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
