Papua New Guinea
Most of my Wikipedia contributions relate to Papua New Guinea and neighbours. Wantok is Tok Pisin that literally means "someone who speaks my language", which by implication means someone from the same village or nearby (Papua New Guinea has the highest diversity of languages in the world, with over 800 languages; the average language is spoken by only 5,000 people). I lived and worked in PNG for several years, I have relatives and friends all over the country, and my second home is in the village of Madina, New Ireland (I spend most of my time in Canberra, Australia). |
Languages
My first language is English. I am fluent in Tok Pisin - I have lived in PNG speaking nothing but Tok Pisin for months at a time, I have written and directed several Tok Pisin productions for national radio and television broadcast, and I set and mark Tok Pisin language proficiency examinations for diplomats, aid workers, and such. I'm currently responsible for translating the Wikimedia interface into Tok Pisin at BetaWiki. I am semi-fluent in Nalik, as my second home is in the Nalik area, and Italian, having lived in Italy for a year. I have a little knowledge of German and French. |
