History

[edit]

The Zanyari Intelligence Agency was formed in 1989 as an intelligence organ of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) under the direct supervision of Jalal Talabani. The core business of the agency is to gather information on regional threats and maintain national security, cooperating closely with Asayish.

The Zanyari Intelligence Agency was run by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan until 2011, where it merged with the Kurdistan Democratic Party run Parastin Agency, to form the Parastin & Zanyari Intelligence Agency, the first Kurdish national intelligence agency of the Kurdistan Regional Government. [1]

The current director of Zanyari is Lahur Talabani, who has served in his post since 2012. Prior to Zanyari, Lahur Talabani was the director of the Counter Terrorism Group (CTG) directorate.

Operations

[edit]

The military directorate of Zanyari, Counter Terrorism Group (CTG), has actively been involved in the war against ISIS in Iraq since mid 2014. The CTG successfully repelled ISIS attacks on Kurdish front lines in Kirkuk province, Makhmur and Jalawla.[2]

Zanyari and CTG supplied the weapons that were airdropped to Kobanî on the 20th October 2014, resupplying the YPG with much needed weapons and ammunitions.[3]
