New Section: Role in Hunger Circuitry

- Mark L. Andermann and Bradford B. Lowell, two prominent scientist in the field say:

"...AgRP neurons and the wiring diagram within which they operate can be viewed as the physical embodiment of the intervening variable, hunger." (1)

- This is because stimulation of these neurons can induce robust feeding behavior, in many contexts:

- actual food consumption (2)

- willingness to work for food (3)

- investigating food odors (4)

- But they are rapidly inhibited upon presentation of food and actual feeding (5)

- These neurons signal with the inhibitor neurotransmitter Neuropeptide Y to sustain feeding (6)

- Are sensitive to hunger signals:

- ghrelin is an appetite stimulant, and it increases AGRP activity (7)

- leptin is a satiety signal, it decreases AGRP activity (8)
