- Oasis releases the mammoth hit album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? which becomes the second best selling album of all time in the United Kingdom[citation needed] and goes on to sell 19 million copies worldwide. Oasis accepted as the biggest band in the world[citation needed] and probably the biggest band in the UK since Queen.[citation needed]
- Nirvana's drummer, Dave Grohl, releases the first and self-titled Foo Fighters record.
- Selena died at Corpus Christi, Texas on March 31 after she was shot 16 days before her 24th birthday.
- Alanis Morissette releases Jagged Little Pill, which has gone on to become the second highest selling album by a female[citation needed] behind fellow Canadian Shania Twain's Come on Over[citation needed]. Though it was not thought to sell more than two hundred and fifty thousand copies it has sold thirty million copies worldwide. The lead single María is also notable for being the first song by Martin in which musically he displays his Latin roots[citation needed]. The album peaks at #11 on Billboards Top Latin Albums eventually going Gold. A more uptempo remix of the single María is later released with Spanglish lyrics and afro-Caribbean beats. This version of the song was hugely successful in Europe becoming the second best selling single in the world that year[citation needed] and would become indicative of Martin's overall style in later albums.[citation needed]
- Enrique Iglesias releases his self-titled debut album which becomes instantly successful throughout the Spanish speaking world particularly in Mexico and Argentina and the Latin Market in the US were it peaked at #1 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums fast becoming Platinum.
