I believe this page needs to link to a page with a list of what current is safe for a gauge, near the sentence "This determines the amount of electrical current a wire can safely carry". (69.5.154.26 05:09, 29 April 2007 (UTC))
Stranded wire
[edit]How is the guage of multi-strand wire determined? Does it just just depend on the outside diameter of the wire, or is there some compensation for the fact that there are air gaps between the strands? --Ong saluri (talk) 06:49, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- The gauge number is the number of the solid wire with the equivalent total cross-section; for instance, a solid 4/0 AWG wire has a diameter of 0.46 inches but a 19-strand 4/0 wire has an overall diameter of 0.528 inches, according to ASTM standard B8. --Wtshymanski (talk) 13:41, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
History of Wire Gauge
[edit]Can anyone add to the article how (mathematical conversion from standard units) the wire gauge was/is derived? Like how does a smaller gauge correspond to a fatter wire? This question may be pertinent to gauges in general, which are units of measurement that are not specific to electrical wiring, such as bore diameter of shotguns, etc.--2600:6C48:7006:200:D84D:5A80:173:901D (talk) 01:50, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Standard for measuring Wire Gauge
[edit]Given that manufacturers like to shave every penny on the cost of things (including electrical wire) is there an accepted standard for measuring wire gauge? Consider that stranded wire (whatever its design) is different than solid wire also, and that metallurgy is not consistent. Please contribute more information to this article. --2600:6C48:7006:200:D84D:5A80:173:901D (talk) 01:49, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
