Sport Jacket?

[edit]

I have never heard it referred to thus. SportS Jacket is standard and widespread, but not Sport [singular].

Can anyone better inform me? Psidogretro (talk) 16:12, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

hmm. This sounds like the whole "daylight saving(s) time" issue. Maybe this'll help. Annoyingly, the article is still misnamed as a single word, if you're going by Esquire's standard. And who cares if this question's over a year old? Orthografer (talk) 03:11, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've definitely heard sport jacket growing up in New Jersey in the 80s/90s. Ashleyisachild (talk) 13:22, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What evidence is there for the statement that it is Sport Jacket in the UK and Sports Jacket in the USA? I grew up with the term 'Sports Jacket' when having to wear them as school uniform in the UK. The OED's earliest evidence for sports jacket is from 1912, in the Times (London). Strongly implying that Sports Jacket is in use in the UK. Is the use of sport (singular) only in the American dialects, or is it used internationally as implied? --Gaskarth (talk) 15:06, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification on the terminology as I understand it

[edit]

The coat or jacket difference depends on the item itself and the climate where you are. Coats are heavier than jackets. Which term you select is regional because of the typical conditions of the sport.

The sport being upland game bird hunting. If this is traditionally done where you live when it's a cooler out you would do so in a sport coat, which is generally going to be heavier and longer. If this is done when it's still a bit warmer you would use a sport jacket.

In no event do you wear a sports or sporting jacket or coat.

The "sport" being the traditional singular "sport" as in hunting not "sports" as in things people play like tennis or golf.

If you were going to undertake a hunt which you could expect to required a higher volume of shooting and more activity such as fowling you would wear a shooting jacket. You wouldn't traditionally have a shooting coat because if it's cold enough to require a coat it's too cold to be fowling. That is of course in the days before synthetics and other modern luxuries.

If you were hunting stag you would chose a stalking coat or stalking jacket. A Stalking jacket generally has more pockets than a sport coat, is waterproof and should have a thick collar which can be turned up against the wind.

Other activities such as riding, spectating (equestrian,) sailing, golfing, and so on have their own traditional attire. None of which are a sport coat or sport jacket.

All that said, these days the words get compounded, and the choice of coat or jacket has nothing to do with the reality of the garment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.150.59.159 (talk) 07:08, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

^ Whoa that sounds really interesting but where are you getting this from? Ashleyisachild (talk) 13:22, 26 June 2015 (UTC) CRUCIAL ISSUES~! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.86.12.174 (talk) 19:07, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tailored?

[edit]

Are all sport coats tailored? Are they called something else if they are not? I've always bought 'em off the rack but I could swear it said "sport coats". -- Gyrofrog (talk) 21:59, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Tailored" is just not an appropriate part of the definition. Editing out. zadignose (talk) 08:31, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rename of article

[edit]

I've just renamed the article from "sportcoat" to "sport coat", which is by far the more common spelling: see Google Ngram results here. As a further check, editors can google up articles in Esquire and GQ, which are generally authoritative in matters of men's dress in the English-speaking world, to see that "sport coat" is the usual spelling. It may be that in time the two words will merge, as have other combinations in English over the centuries - but it hasn't happened yet. Textorus (talk) 14:45, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I always think of 'sport(s) coat' being American usage, and 'sports jacket' being British. --Ef80 (talk) 17:05, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I’ve only ever heard it called a sports jacket. I’m British and in my fifties so was around when these were more popular! So the article seems to be the wrong way round when it says which version is primarily American English. Liberaljon (talk) 20:26, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Alright. Then this article is the exception to the otherwise WP:Consistancy wording found in Lounge jacket, Mess jacket, and Smoking jacket. Chicbyaccident (talk) 00:39, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
