Second name/Untitled
[edit]There's something wrong with the article: Beresford's middle name. It was "Poo" (very unusual!) not the fancier-sounding French "de la Poeur" used by some descendants. Oxford Nat. Biog has him as: "Beresford, Sir John Poo, first baronet (1766–1844), naval officer and politician, Oxford Biography Index Number 101002197"
We have portraits of him by Beechy, one in oil (not as good as the one in National Portrait Gallery), the other a print (he looks splendid); they have his middle name as "Poo".
Contemporary documents call him "Poo".
I've wondered if it had anything to do with the island then called Fernando Poo in the Atlantic. 75.161.67.96 (talk) 01:56, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- You're absolutely right, an anonymous editor changed it in August 2009. Lozleader (talk) 20:50, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- Yes definitely "Poo" per all the notices regarding his naval and parliamentary career in the London Gazette. It appears his son, the 2nd Baronet, adopted the more pretentious form.Lozleader (talk) 21:00, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Second name, again
[edit]I've added "de la Poer" as an alternate second name, with a reference. The link is to Leigh Rayment, which the edit warning said was unreliable, but he cites Cokayne for the name, so I reckon it's OK. It is also more logical; "de la Poer" was a family name of his father, and was used by his descendants, while "Poo", the name in ODNB, is (AFAIK) Portuguese, which doesn't feature in the family's heritage at all. I'm assuming it was a nickname of some kind, but I don't have any evidence for that. It also seems to attract scatological vandalism (I've reverted what I can find): Anyway, I've modified it; I trust everyone is OK with that. Swanny18 (talk) 10:47, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
