Ali, Tibet → Shiquanhe —, as "Ali" seems to be the name for the entire prefecture, not for the town. Vmenkov (talk) 01:50, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
On what grounds is it stated that "Ali" is used as the name of town? The Chinese maps I have seen use "Ali" as the name of the entire prefecture, and label its capital as Ga'er (because it's the capital seat of Gar County) and/or Shiquanhe (because it is the name of the zhen that serves as the county seat). (It is common in China to refer to a county seat by both the name of the zhen and the name of the entire county, e.g. Maoping vs. Zigui). Do any English maps or guidebooks refer to the town (as opposed to the entire prefecture) as "Ali"? Vmenkov (talk) 01:50, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
- I believe you are right in that Shiquanhe (And others are used) is the name for the town, and it is the prefecture that is named Ali. And also about the Chinese tendency to call the prefecture capital by the name of the prefecture. A habit I found confusing while travelling there. Unfortunately in this case most of the English guide books (not sure about maps) do use the name Ali for the town. In fact I would say almost all English speaking tourists (not a good source of info, but you did ask about guidebooks) would be unaware that Ali was not the official name. Relevantly there is a conversation here and here about naming conventions of Tibetan articles, check it out.
- This is a long reply to say I don't mind if the article is moved or not.--Keithonearth (talk) 05:48, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
