[edit]I think I've now successfully changed it from a stub to a proper article, but I couldn't find out how to change its status.
- All you need to do is remove the stub message from the bottom of the article. Also, you can sign your name using four tildes ~~~~ to make answering your questions easier. [[User:MikeX|—MikeX (Talk)]] 15:01, Oct 11, 2004 (UTC)
Have added info from Darwin, Adrian Desmond and James Moore, Michael Joseph, the Penguin Group, London 1991 ISBN 0-7181-3430-3 which states that his anatomy school was private, plus dates of this school from Chambers Bigraphical Dictionary: this gives it lasting to 1840, while this article says ending follows on from 1831 - is there a contradiction? ..dave souza 00:30, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Why does the introduction associate his views on anthropology and ethnology with "natural theology"? That is a quite unrelated topic, isn't it?124.197.15.138 (talk) 06:07, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
No, I don't understand the connection with 'natural theology either.' Does anyone have a source for the remarks about Bell harming Knox's career? And who regards his views as racist? Awhbates (talk) 17:43, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
Have deleted the 'racism' claim from the into and plan to include it in the ethnology section, though personally I don't see the value of retrospective diagnoses of racism, speciesism, etc. Most of the ethnology section is at present about transcendentalism, and I suggest a separate section for this, and the inclusion of K's work on saltatory evolution.Awhbates (talk) 21:03, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

[edit]The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Robert Knox (surgeon)/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.
Calling Knox a racist is inflammatory and inappropriate. The concept of racism is a 20th century idea, resulting from greater knowledge and insight. His ideas were not racist when taken in the context of his time and the level of knowledge available at the time. It is academically invalid to fail to consider the person and the society as it was in his/her lifetime. Two hundred years from now, those of us who are so "enlightened" may be judged as ignorant or racist when our descendants have advanced their knowledge base. Then, as now, that is incorrect and unfair. |

Picture
[edit]I've added a larger resolution picture of Knox, how do I make it so the larger one is the one shown and not the smaller one? Thecd3m (talk) 02:18, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
Not Scottish
[edit]Robert Knox obviously wasn't Scottish and didn't consider himself such (just like most Lowlanders of the time). He was of Anglo-Saxon descent, spoke English, strongly considered himself Germanic and English and this had huge influence on his racial theories and behavior in life. Who is Wikipedia to retroactively go back and reclassify people's ethnic belonging. Are you going to suggest Hitler was actually Jewish and not German simply because he carried E1b1b paternal Y-DNA now? We don't even know Knox's Y-DNA, but it was very likely R1b-U106 or I1. 92.1.135.191 (talk) 23:48, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
- Interesting point. We could take the Roald Dahl or David LLoyd George approach and say something like "Robert Knox FRSE FRCSE (4 September 1791 – 20 December 1862) was an anatomist and ethnologist from Scotland, best known for his involvement in the Burke and Hare murders." Would that be OK by you? Tim O'Doherty (talk) 21:05, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
- Well sure, but he wasn't even from Scotland. It didn't exist at the time as a legal entity or even an administrative division. He was from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Legally. 2.99.87.95 (talk) 07:10, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
- hmmm - king charles iii recently had to be separately crowned twice - once as the english king and again (with less publicity) as the scottish king (the same occurred with elizabeth ii etc) since there are are separate thrones but just held by the same person since 1603 - so idea that scotland "didn't exist" as a kingdom at all in the 1820's is false. 82.16.72.221 (talk) 19:57, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
