JPEG and the "bitmap" term

Should we really call JPEG a bitmap file format? Sure, the final result after decompression is a bitmap, but the way the image is stored in a JPEG file does not represent an actual map of pixels at all...
PNG and GIF on the other hand are okay I guess, because even though they do use compression, it's just a lossless compression over a map of bits, which is fine.--201.51.130.79 (talk) 16:11, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
