Poor definition

"An optical comparator (often called just a comparator in context) is a device that applies the principles of optics to the inspection of manufactured parts"

This applies to anything from cameras to microscopes; a more precise definition is needed. Unfortunately, the article is currently so poor I can't deduce what this device actually does!

Proposed merger

Request received to merge articles: Profile Projector into Optical comparator; dated April 2018.

There's an orphan article entitled Profile Projector that seems to be basically about the same thing as this article. Note that I don't know enough about the topic to be capable of satisfactorily merging them myself. Rosbif73 (talk) 09:41, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
