Elzar Catchphase
[edit]It should be noted that this episode is the only time that Elzar uses Emeral's catchphase "kick it up a notch" as apposed to his parody catchphase "knock it up a notch". Sarujo 07:19, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Cultural references
[edit]As I recently brought up at the wikiproject (here) it is time we did something about the cultural references sections. I am moving all unsourced references to the talk pages for the time being in hopes of creating a better, more thoroughly sourced article. Please discuss this action at the wikiproject link above so as not to split it over 72 different talk pages. The information removed from the article follows. Cultural references
[edit]- The title is a reference to the 1960s sitcom My Three Sons.
- At the beginning of the episode when Bender goes through the robot wash the song Car Wash by Rose Royce plays and Bender sings along with his own version.
- As they're going through Little Neptune, they pass a "Head Shop"--which is slang for a shop where drug paraphernalia (for potheads) are sold. On Little Neptune, the "head shop" sells human heads.
- The Neptunian chef Elzar is a spoof of the popular TV chef Emeril.
- Bender cooks wearing a chef's apron bearing the bold text "TO SERVE MAN". This is a reference to the short story by Damon Knight and an episode with the same title of the TV show, The Twilight Zone. In that story, the large book carried by giant aliens promising a bright future for Earth and its inhabitants turns out to be a cookbook.
- The alien stand-up comic making the racially oriented jokes is a reference to Chris Rock.
- The "Forbidden Zone" could be a reference to the movie of the same name, and "Galaxy of Terror" was a low-budget 1981 sci-fi movie.
- In the Little Neptune Market, when Bender is looking through the shop glass, there's a parody of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter product which reads "I can't believe it's not Slug".
- One of Bender's prime minister's sash medals features an image of Homer Simpson (2nd from bottom).

- Fry recounts the story of The Grasshopper and the Octopus, his version of the aesop fable The ant and the grasshopper, as a rationalization for laziness: "All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also, he got a racecar."

TV-14
[edit]It should be noted, Comedy Central makes every episode TV-14. Even The Devils Hands are Idle Playthings, which has no swears.
