Renaming
[edit]The arch isnt an actual Arch of Triumph. It wasnt built by Severus and no inscription exist. All the accounts that it was built by Severus to commemorate a victory arent academic
I edited the article and provided specialized sources to explain the purpose of the arch but one problem remain : Its not a triumphal arch and academic sources call it : Monumental arch
I suggest renaming the page into : The monumental arch of Palmyra.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 19:02, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Attar-Aram syria: I moved the page to Monumental Arch of Palmyra. Regarding the issue whether the arch is triumphal or not, was it built solely to mask the change in orientation or could it have served a double purpose as a triumphal arch? I believe it probably had an inscription, but it was destroyed/lost over time (one of the façades had been missing for centuries before the arch was blown up by ISIS). On a different note, this destruction is really barbaric and unnecessary, I hope they'll rebuild Palmyra someday. Xwejnusgozo (talk) 19:50, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
- Thank @Xwejnusgozo:. I really think that it was a triumph arch. Its much flashier but I couldnt find any scholar who said it was (sadly). The existence of ISIS is barbaric in itself. No rebuilding will restore the old soul of the place. its over and Palmyra is dead.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 19:54, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
