Salvatore Marchesi
[edit]I am aware of what reference books say, but Matilde Marchesi's husband's correct name was Salvatore di Castrone (1830-1908), presumably belonging to the ancient di Castrone family whose palazzo at Santa Ninfa, Sicily, is now a tourist attraction.
To this he added the descriptive dei marchesi della Rajata, meaning, "of the marquesses of Rajata", to indicate which branch of the Castrone family he belonged to. Rajata is a place in Sicily. It is from this plural of the word marchese ('marquess or marquis') that he chose his nom de théâtre, 'Salvatore Marchesi'.
He was known as the Cavaliere di Castrone because he was a nobleman but not a titled one.
