Island names

[edit]

I am frustrated. Despite there being TWO main islands in Marakei, almost every reference I can find refers just to Marakei Island - as though there was only one. Nowhere can I find the names of the two islands. Anyone have any information? Ptilinopus (talk) 22:46, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Size

[edit]

How can the land area be greater than the atoll area? The atoll area is stated as 13.5 sq.km. The land area is stated as 14.13 sq.km. The atoll area should include the land area plus the lagoon area... The atoll area must be much bigger... Using approx measurements of the atoll, I calculate the total atoll area should be approximately 40 sq.km. But article after article copies Wikipedia and other site errors perpetuating the 13.5 figure. One site claimed the lagoon area is 295.77 sq km which is preposterous! More moderate environmental description

The construction of causeways caused a significant reduction in the flushing of the lagoon, reducing the water's oxygen and causing stagnation so that fish are no longer found in it.

I've suggested this revision:

The construction of causeways caused a significant reduction in the flushing of the lagoon, reducing the water's oxygen levels so that fish are no longer found in it.

Technically, "stagnation" simply means "lack of current". However, some readers may infer that there were more serious effects (e.g. decay, disease), which doesn't seem fair to the island's image. Hope you agree. – AndyFielding (talk) 22:19, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
