[edit]The date 1936 is false. Nazis came to power in Austria march 1938! Queenspawn (talk) 08:52, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I think that he left Berlin, where he had been treating morphine addicts, in 1933, when the Nazis came to power in Germany. He was certainly looking for a way out of Austria before 1938 and tried to get to Australia before a US colleague suggested he travel there. Freekra (talk) 09:57, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
I'm not a psychiatrist, but I doubt that Sakel's therapy is still used in Europe today. As far as I understand, this therapy was criticized for many reasons (its cruelty, and many side effects). David.Monniaux 13:55, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Of course is no longer used. The article says so, --R.Sabbatini 15:54, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Why was he forced to emmigrate to the US on account of a political party?--Hooperbloob 08:51, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- On the account of being Jewish. --R.Sabbatini 15:54, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, the article still says this:
"(in Europe it is still used, under the name "Sakel's Therapy")"
If this is not the case, can it be changed? 22 Jan 2006 I changed it. This type of therapy isn't used any more. But something else: I wonder if here was really Polish. I mean, his name is clearly German! Does anybody have information on that? 80.140.249.125 21:54, 10 February 2007 (UTC) The NSDAP clearly did not get to power 1936 in Autria. Austria was invaded 1938. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.141.102.212 (talk) 13:47, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- Re Sakel's name. Complicated, he was born in a town in Galicia called Nadvorna, which had a large Jewish population, that is now part of modern Ukraine. Galicia was a province of Poland (1st Republic) until the late 18th century when Poland underwent a tripartite split between its neighbours, the Austro-Hungarian, Russian and Polish empires. End of Poland for a while until 1918 and the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and emergence of plethora of nation states in its former provinces in central Europe. Eastern Galicia reverts to Poland. Western Galicia contested by Ukraine and then Bolshevik regime. Reverts to new Poland by 1923. As part of Molotov-Ribbontrop reverts to Soviets. Occupied by Germany 1941. Reverts to Soviets after the war.
- Sakel, one would have to consider a westernised Jew. During his period the bureaucratic administration and liberal elites would have spoken German in the Austrian half of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire (which contained "Poland". German was the ruling language of that half of the Austrian Empire. Jews trying to assimilate would not, for obvious reasons, have been attracted to national languages of Polish, Czech etc. Most assimilated were Germanophiles. For comparison check out someone like Kafka who lived in Prague. Similar story. Sakel was born in a multi-national that disintegrated during his lifetime. Saying he was Polish or Ukrainian or whatever doesn't seem particularly enlightening. Freekra (talk) 09:54, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Vienna or Berlin?
[edit]According to the German article, he "discovered" insulin shock therapy not in Vienna but in Berlin. After studying medicine in Brno and Vienna, Sakel went to Berlin in 1927. [] worked at Kurt Mendel's private sanitarium in Berlin-Lichterfelde. Here he treated mainly morphium-addicted actors, artists and physicians. One female addicted diabetic had inadvertently received an insulin overdose which triggered light hypoglycaemia. Sakel observed her reduced craving for morphium. He started treating all patients with insulin and then fled from the Nazis back to Vienna and started implementing the treatment there, at Universitätsklinik in October 1933. His emigration to the USA, still according to the German article, was not in 1933 but 1936. There is no direct citation, but the apparent source is deutsche-biographie.de. --2.204.227.33 (talk) 10:09, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
