Time for a new title?
[edit]Is it time to rename this article? It says "Pre-1970" but appears to cover many pre-1970 cyclones. It says "Southern Hemisphere" but I see Australian cyclones. Also, it says "seasons" but appears to be covering individual cyclones. Maybe it should be called Australian cyclones? Kerry (talk) 08:53, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
- I agree that its worth having a chat about the article title so thanks for bringing it up Kerry, but I feel that it worth expanding that out to talk about what should happen with this article. In theory this article is meant to cover all of the tropical cyclones that we know happened, between Africa and South America before the 1970-71 seasons. However, it currently doesnt and there has also been a lot of work done over the last few years on more of the ancient tropical cyclones. So I feel that it might be about time that this article got split into a few articles. However, is it better to keep them at Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclones at the moment or split them up by basin like we do for post 1970 articles? (PS: South Atlantic would be covered but there are very few TC's known to have existed there.)Jason Rees (talk) 13:05, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
- Given that List of South-West Indian Ocean cyclones before 1963 already exists, I'd favor splitting what's left of this into SPAC and AUS at this point, given that all three basins, after 9 years, have been extended back to 1970. YE Pacific Hurricane 14:42, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Excuse my ignorance, but what are the significance of 1963 and 1970 in terms of cyclones being before/after those years? Does it relate to source material availability or something? Kerry (talk) 04:37, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
- Sory for the late response @Kerry Raymond: but there is no significance in 1963, while 1969-70 is considered the start of the satellite era by many which means we are able to better detect these cyclones and provide earlier warning. Both of these probably shouldn't have an impact on when we go back to in terms of cyclone coverage but maybe reasonable cut of dates - only time will tell :).Jason Rees (talk) 18:44, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
