Notability?

[edit]

I redirected this to Foreign relations of the Republic of Ireland but was asked to discuss first; fine. Yes, there have been fairly routine, minor interactions between Ireland and Romania, as one might expect for two EU members. And yes, there is a significant presence of Romanian citizens in Ireland, a fact that is noted at Romanian diaspora and could be noted at, say, Demographics of the Republic of Ireland. But the undeniable fact is that there simply aren't sources discussing this relationship in any meaningful depth; even the Romanian Foreign Ministry has essentially nothing to say on the matter. It's worth noting the existence of relations at Foreign relations of the Republic of Ireland and Foreign relations of Romania, but that is about the extent of encyclopedic validity this topic holds. - Biruitorul Talk 21:07, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see that an extensive centralised discussion took place as far back as 2009 on the topic of notability of articles concerned with bilateral relations, but no clear consensus appears to have emerged as to how the issue is dealt with. Is there a more recent debate with a firmer outcome? RashersTierney (talk) 23:07, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not that I know of, and in the absence of such a guideline, WP:GNG is the relevant policy. We presume notability if "a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". The basic problem, as I see it, is that the topic of "Ireland–Romania relations" (as opposed to chance interactions between the two states) is not, in fact, covered as such by independent sources. - Biruitorul Talk 01:05, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If there is a realistic source of material for this article in English it will probably be found here, the Irish Times. I don't currently have a subscription or the time today to search but will make an effort in the coming days to see if this article can meet the requirements. This style of article seems to have little notability and as with some of the other similar Ireland-Other country articles, whose notability was questioned, it should be redirected/merged to Foreign relations of Romania and will take up very little space in that page. ww2censor (talk) 10:10, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
