Suggested Improvements
[edit]Good article. Some of it borders on original research, and using pages from WikiWikiWeb as a reference is a bit questionable, as a) wikis are often not considered reliable sources, and c2.com in particular lacks adequate version control. Also, the article as it stands is a bit long... an article on History of WikiWikiWeb is screaming to get out. Finally, some mention ought to be made of wiki farms such as Wikia and WikiSpaces, among others. --EngineerScotty 21:43, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for the appreciation. I worried a bit about the original research aspect, but since there seems to be little out there on the history of wikis, I went ahead and used what I could find, leaning heavily on wiki sources. And I'm afraid that if I create a separate article on History of WikiWikiWeb some administrator will find it unjustified or suggest that it be merged back into the WikiWikiWeb article. I agree about adding wiki farms, but at the moment I'm a bit exhausted from my labours. I also thought of adding something about Wikimania, Wiki Symposium and RecentChangesCamp, but as you note the article is already rather long. - Redeyed Treefrog 22:25, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
- Another possibility would be to create a separate article on History of wiki engines, or even a separate one on History of wiki websites. - Redeyed Treefrog 08:23, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Peter Merel or Peter Merrel?
[edit]An unsigned IP edit changed the spelling from "Peter Merel" to "Peter Merrel." I believe this is incorrect: a Google search for "Merel + CvWiki" returns a great many entries, but a search for "Merrel + CvWiki" returns nothing. Moreover, why was the spelling only changed in one spot, when Merel is mentioned three times in the article? I have used an "undo" to put the spelling back to "Peter Merel." - Redeyed Treefrog 22:37, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Everything2
[edit]The jump from Cunningham's WikiWiki to post-Wikipedia is a bit sudden. At least Everything2 should be mentioned here, I believe. It originated at Slashdot but attracted a wide non-geek audience right from the start, although it didn't quite break through to the general public. Here is a usage report I saved:

Trim WikiWikiWeb discussion?
[edit]WikiWikiWeb having its own page, I feel the detailed discussion of its history I'm seeing here should be moved over. It makes the present article unbalanced (and it is already unbalanced enough in other ways). Rp (talk) 16:11, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yaron K has just improved this, great! Still I think the discussion of the internal WikiWikiWeb politics is out of place here. Not having used it I don't want to do it myself. 08:01, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Post-WikiWikiWeb
[edit]I feel like the heading title "Post-WikiWikiWeb" isn't approperiate because there is no discussion of WikiWikiWeb before the section begins. I think a more appropriate title would be something like "1994-2001: The First Wikis" (especially because the years in the Post-WikiWikiWeb header are in a different format to those in the other section headers). I might be missing something though, so I decided to not make the change myself and instead post here Allanlw 17:37, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Pre-1994
[edit]Isn't it better to limit this article to Wikis? People can look up the history of hypertext or the World Wide Web in those articles, can't they? Rp (talk) 18:39, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Wiki numbers
[edit]It would be useful to include the number of wikis in different periods or at least the current number if there's a source for that. Mcljlm (talk) 02:12, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
Section for 2013-Present

FedWiki
[edit]For the last 10 years, Cunningham and a team of developers has been focused on a reimagined wiki, known as the Federated Wiki, to address fundamental concerns of the original wiki architecture and experience. Curious why there is no mention of that work in this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IslandWay (talk • contribs) 18:54, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
