How many kids does this guy have? Cleanup personal life!

I wish the personal life section actually had something of merit, it is currently just a listing of known children he has had, but is obviously missing info as there was no info on the son that was declared dead last week... Any more information available? Clean up existing info? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.168.132.223 (talk) 10:33, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't think we need much on that. It was pretty one-sided. They were getting along fine until 2pac just decided to diss Dre for leaving death row and something about not supporting snoop dogg in court or some bullshit. I suspect he was just pissed that Dre would only produce 2 of his songs. He had to beg Dre to give him "California Love", which was originally supposed to be Dre's songs. He probably signed with Death Row hoping that he would be tight with Dre and Dre would produce his albums. As I said that was pretty one-sided, and Dre probably wouldn't have responded if 2pac had been alive. The only person Dre really had a big beef with was Eazy.

Yeah I remember Dre saying when he was asked in an MTV interview way back about Pac (when pac was still alive) that he was an ultra talented rapper who had all kindsa skills, then the interviewer asked him about what Pac was like as a person and he said, "Oh, he's a punk. A total punk." And then he talked about how he was disrepectful and didn't have noi repsect for nobody. Tayquan hollaMy work 02:50, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Dre didn't seem to have to much interest in him though, he only mentioned his personality when directly asked about it, he spoke positively about him until he was pressed. SO I'd agree it ewasn;t too big of a deal from Dre's side. Tayquan hollaMy work 02:52, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Oh yeah I remember 'Pac saying Dre doesn't do enough work... he was probably talking about not doing enough work on his (Tupac's) albums. --- 19:58, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, the environment at Death Row changed once Tupac joined the lable, and most resources were headed to him. That's one of the many reasons Dre left and made Aftermath. I'm sure Tupac dissed everybody who left Death Row. He even got mad at Lady of Rage publically for not participating in his disses and stuff like that. Dre, on the other hand, thought that most of that wasn't important and that he needed to do his own thing and focus on improving the music. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.216.132.51 (talk) 12:54, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Only 2pac fans even care about this stupid beef and there really wasn't even much to it. 2pac died not long after dre left death row so this beef isn't even worth mentioning it was just 2pac saying one or two lines about dre. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Siwhat (talkcontribs) 04:17, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Removing Trivia section

Does anyone have a problem with the trivia section being removed? There is only one bit of info there and wikipedia frowns on trivia. Besides, it doesn't seem necessary to point out that he smokes marijuana. The name of his albums is the chronic.66.167.78.254 05:33, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

"See References"

Does this article realy need to use the phrase "see references" 18 times? Is it not assumed the external links will provide more information without continually drawing attention to them? 62.49.68.222 16:09, 22 May 2007 (UTC)}

The thing was that some editors didn't know how to use footnotes and so used those just to try to attribute information here to the sources. That doesn't work for an encyclopedia; footnotes are a much cleaner way to do so. I cleaned practically all of them out in February/March I believe.--Andrewlp1991 (talk) 01:23, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

What does this mean?

"George Heler, known invariably as Dre's partner in crime, has a business with Dre producing compact discs which is estimated to be worth in excess of $300 million.".

What does this mean? Does this mean that Dr. Dre is involved in crime with George Heler or something like that? The statement is confusing. --- 72.142.212.28 22:43, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Is this/Was this ever true? Printing discs? Isn't that Sony's job or something? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.216.132.51 (talk) 12:49, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

"Dre fell off"

What does this refer to? I hear Dr Dre often refferiong to being accused of 'falling off' i his lyrics, but have no idea what he is talking about.

fell off means to lose your popularity. Dr. Dre went a little bit out of the spotlight after leaving death row but after he signed eminem he was back in full force. that is why he addresses all the haters in 2001. Can't wait for Detox to come and save the music industry.

yeah dre's "Dr. Dre Presents: The Aftermath", "The Firm" were not considered as good as dre's earlier stuff. but the main talk of him falling off was with King T's album "Thy Kingdom Come". That album was supposed to be aftermath's big debut. But only got ok reviews. which wasn't good enough for dre, so dre put the album on hold. Most of the critisms of him falling off were probably from death row.

Innovating G-Funk

I notice it was added recently that he is a key figure in innovating G-Funk "along with Ryan West". Is there any source for this? I was under the impression that he produced the Chronic by himself. Drumac 23:44, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

na he had some help from bass writers like colin wolfe etc.. daz is credited for helping write rat-tat-tat-tat. however daz does claim there are songs on doggystyle and the chronic that he wasn't credited for. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Siwhat (talkcontribs) 08:49, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Misleading

Under work ethic it says:

A consequence of this perfectionism is that some artists that initially sign deals with Dre's Aftermath label never release albums. In 2001, Aftermath released the soundtrack to the movie "The Wash". featuring a number of Aftermath acts such as Shaunta, Daks, Joe Beast and Toi. To date, none have released full-length albums on Aftermath and have apparently ended their relationships with the label and Dr. Dre. Other noteworthy acts to leave Aftermath without releasing albums include 2001 vocalist Hittman and 1980s rap icon Rakim (see references for details).

This implies that all those artists were slacking off and didn't have a strong work ethic which is misleading and not true. Actually for most of the cases, the artists left aftermath because Dre never got around to producing their album 66.167.204.49 22:08, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree, It should be changed. Any suggestions? --¤ The-G-Unit-฿oss ¤ 09:27, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

i read in an interview that dre had simply signed too many artists to the label in the beginning. he said he thought he could just sign anyone and make it work at the time. but then he realised he couldn't. if someone can find that they should add something about it. id do it myself but id probably do a shit job of it and it will just end up getting deleted.

Associated acts

According to Template:Infobox_musical_artist#Associated_acts: the field is to be used for "[a]cts from which this act spun off; acts which spun off a group act; groups with which an artist performs; other acts with which the act is associated." I think that we should use that field strictly for groups/solo artists whom dre has frequently worked with, not just once or twice. I monitor many rap/hiphop related articles on my watchlist and notice this happening. Thus, I will go clean it all up soon, and so should other editors.--Andrewlp1991 (talk) 01:26, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

I agree therefore Daz and RBX and mabey MC Ren, Ice Cube, Eazy-E should be removed from the list. Dr. Dre hasn't done any songs with Daz and RBX in years. He's only done 2 songs with ice cube since n.w.a. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Siwhat (talkcontribs) 04:49, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Awards

On the article, there is almost no mention of the amount of Awards and Nominations Dr. Dre has won during his career. As he is an artist and producer to many award-winning tracks and albums, the list is probably large. An example of what's needed is something like this: List of 50 Cent awards and nominations, which Dr. Dre dosen't have

To start, here is some of what he has done that has won Grammy's:

Let Me Ride - Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance - 1994 | Forgot About Dre - Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group - 2001 | (with Eminem) The Marshall Mathers LP - Grammy Award for Best Rap Album - 2001 (with Eminem) Mkimemia 09:05, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Reference?

In the introduction to this article there is a statement that "Dr. Dre is considered one of the greatest producers of all time". I have no opinion about that, but the reference given to it does not back the claim. It has no mention of him being one of the greatest producers of all time. One has to reference such a claim. Dr.Dre's son "Hood Surgeon" birth name is "Curtis Mclemore" not Curtis Young... and he was connected to Dr. Dre by his then friend/producer Mengesha Mystro Francis.. "Mystro" made a call to Dr. Dre's lawyer Howard King in 2002, and then Dr. Dre requested a test to prove that Curtis was truly his son.. the test was proven to be true, However after Curtis met Dre, he no longer wanted to do music or stay friends with Mengesha Mystro Francis. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.90.227.253 (talk) 06:08, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

It's been deleted - obviously must've been copyright infringement. That's a problem that WP:NFCC causes; a lot of times biographical articles lack images due to that policy. Especially when nobody's willing to upload their non-copyrighted photos of Dr. Dre, which I'm sure may exist in some people's photo albums but not on the Internet. --Andrewlp1991 (talk) 21:25, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

GA nomination

I have nominated this article for status as one of the Arts Good Articles; I have significantly contributed to sourcing and copyediting the article to a higher standard than it ever has been. This article is very comprehensive about Dr. Dre's life and contributions to music and film; nearly all statements here are sourced. Feel free to leave any feedback here. --Andrewlp1991 (talk) 21:29, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

I saw the GA nomination and went through to format and copy edit as well; it looks really good! I am concerned with the main infobox image though—there's next to no chance that it is free use. --Kakofonous (talk) 15:29, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm also requesting help in adding some information in the article.
      • There should be more on the 2000 "Up in Smoke" tour with Eminem, Snoop Dogg, & Ice Cube [1]
      • Also about the lawsuit over copyright issues in the Dre-produced song "Addictive" by Truth Hurts, as I mentioned before. The initial report and result
      • Sources are needed for Dre's credit in 50 Cent's "In Da Club" and The Game's "How We Do". [all done now]

  • Is there really no free image? Never been to a concert or anything like that?
  • Doesn't sound good to start a section with "he" (throughout)
    • Rephrased. Note: To reach FA status this article will need a prose rewrite, has the age-old wiki problem of reading like: In 1996...After that...Then...In 1997...After this... etc Sillyfolkboy (talk)
  • "Andre and brother Tyree were raised primarily by their father Curtis or grandmother" - needs commas and stuff, sounds awkward for now. What was the grandmother's name?
  • "Andre would later meet as the rapper Hood Surgeon about 20 years later" - repetition/redundancies
  • "Soon afterwards, he adopted his current moniker, Dr. Dre" - where did that name come from?
  • "He frequently skipped school as he continued to explore rap music despite receiving good grades in certain classes on the few days he did attend" - commas please, it's a very hard-to-read sentence...
  • Album titles in section headings need italics
  • "and warnings from the FBI." - woah, that's a big deal. What happened?
  • "Death Row Records was signing rapper 2Pac and positioning him as their major star, Young left Death Row Records" - repetition...
  • "released at the end of the year," - slightly confused here; which year?
  • Billboard (including in context of Billboard 200) needs italics throughout
  • "Kanye West also praised Dr. Dre" - "also" is weird as he got bagged out in the last sentence...
  • "it was alleged..." - a citation is neeeded
  • "from 1990 to 1996 and in 1991 she gave birth to his son," - doesn't read well, break it up with commas and copyedit

User:Sillyfolkboy Mini review

  • This biography claims that Jerome was Dre's full brother but died of cot death. Is there a better source for this info?

*How should we refer to Dr. Dre in the article? I took a look at the guidelines [2] and it wasn't much use. I think we should aim for consistency using either: "Dr. Dre", "Young" or "Dre" throughout. Other example articles like Slim Pickens, Hulk Hogan, Ja Rule and Tila Tequila all seem to have this same problem of mixed usage. Is there a precedent?

*Is it "Romell" or "Romelle"? IMDB states the former and we have a mix of the two in this article.

**I'm leaning towards "Andre Romell Young" given the way he got the name (The Romells) and google results favour that too. Though, "Andre Romel Young" is also a close runner up. Perhaps a source from a book/biography would solve it. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 03:13, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

*Seeing as images are scant, a small selection of sound samples showing the evolution of Dre's sound, from NWA to 2001, would be welcome.

Addressing the sheer lack of media in this article is a must for passing GA standards. Please strike out when fixed. Comments/questions to my talk page or Dr. Dre talk page please. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 20:21, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding media: Because there's no free images of Dr. Dre himself available online, we'll just have to deal with it. But the article is well-sourced and written with acceptable prose; that's why I nominated the article. Regarding the middle name: I got the "Romelle" spelling from Ronin Ro's book Dr. Dre: The Biography that's used as a source frequently here.
There's still more things I'd like to add, including what I've mentioned in previous section and the 2004 Vibe Awards confrontation. [done on 5/25] --Andrewlp1991 (talk) 04:10, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
P.S.: Regarding images: Good article criteria states that "[t]he presence of images is not, in itself, a requirement for Good articles. However, if images (including other media) with acceptable copyright status are appropriate and readily available, then some such images should be provided." Item 4 of the criteria itself notes that Good Articles are usually "illustrated, if possible, by images" (emphasis mine)--Andrewlp1991 (talk) 04:23, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
And Jerome's cot death was mentioned in Ronin Ro's book. I didn't add it, since this article isn't the Jerome Young article; don't turn the Dr. Dre article into a coatrack for off-topic material (such as trivial family matters) --Andrewlp1991 (talk) 04:24, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
I was only asking to clarify that Dre wasn't the only child of his parents. And the article states that jerome was only his half brother which appears untrue. Can someone who knows better than me change that? Sillyfolkboy (talk) 13:10, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Following the addition of media: is this article ready to pass now? Sillyfolkboy (talk) 20:02, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Dr. Dre naming convention

I took a look at the guidelines[3] and it wasn't much use. I think we should aim for consistency using either: "Dr. Dre", "Young" or "Dre" throughout. It's Romelle; according to the Ronin Ro book used in the references. And I think that "Young" should be used for years before he adopted the "Dr. Dre" nickname. --Andrewlp1991 (talk) 04:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

"Young also produced other West Coast rap albums of Death Row Records, including Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound and the album Regulate...G Funk Era by his stepbrother Warren G. In 1994 Dr. Dre produced the single "No Diggity" by Blackstreet." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Siwhat (talkcontribs) 23:16, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Entrepreneur Part of Dr. Dre Page

I was wondering if whoever is in control of the Dr. Dre article page could add the fact that he is involved with Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd. He is currently working with them to unveil a cognac and a line of sparkling flavored vodkas. I think this is an important part of his career, right now. I do not know really how to do this since I am new to Wikipedia but I thought it should be brought to the attention of whoever is editing this page.

Jrod38 (talk) 19:04, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Please update your Dr. Dre "Entrepreneur" section.

Dr. Dre out with big news today on the formation of Aftermath Beverage Company. He will market his new cognac and line of flavored sparkling vodkas in conjunction with Drinks Americas.

Here is the gist of the press release:

In August 2008, it was unveiled that Dr. Dre formed his own beverage company called Aftermath Beverage Company. The Company has completed the development, formulation, packaging and branding for the first spirits products arising out of its joint venture with Universal’s Interscope Geffen A&M Records. With respect to the production and supply of the Aftermath Cognac, the Company has entered into an agreement for the production, supply and European distribution of the cognac with Abecassis Cognac, a producer of premium cognacs in France. Completion of this agreement will not only give the Company access to a superior and necessary inventory of fine cognac, but calls for the Aftermath Beverage Company brands to be distributed by Abecassis in the European countries in which it is now doing business.

Following the introduction of the Aftermath Cognac, the Company’s joint venture with Interscope/Dre/Aftermath will introduce a unique new line of 80-proof flavored and unflavored sparkling vodkas. These products are to be introduced in coordination with the launch of Dr. Dre’s long-awaited “Detox” album, and will be supported by a fully integrated marketing program with the performer and his record company.

The Company has taken note of apparent customer anticipation for the Company’s Aftermath line of alcoholic beverages as evidenced by over one million “Google” mentions in advance of any actual product availability in the marketplace.

"Xavier Bonilla(born February 18, 1965), primarily known by his stage name Dr. Dre"

I have found no other mention of the "Xavier Bonilla" name in the article. It says in the sidebar his birth name is Andre Young. This looks like vandalism to me.

Introduction

This article's introduction could use more inline citations. It is very lacking in them. The rest of the article seems fine.

Weird Punctuation

This article has multiple instances of ref tags that have a period or comma both before and after them. This is greatly offensive to my eyes. Could someone please change it? I can't edit this article. Phlegat (talk) 14:49, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

Typo

This article is locked or I'd change it myself, but in this paragraph:

Inspired by the Grandmaster Flash song "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel", he often attended a club called The Eve After Dark to watch many DJs and rappers performing live. Thus, he became a DJ in the club, initially under the name "Dr. J", based on the nickname of Julius Erving, his favorite basketball player. At the club, he met aspiring rapper Antoine Carraby, later to become member DJ Yella of N.W.A.[10] Soon afterwards he adopted the moniker Dr. Dre, a mix of previous alias Dr. J and his first name, referring to himself as the "Master of Mixology".[11] He later joined the musical group World Class Wreckin' Cru under the independent Kru-Cut Records in 1984. The group would become stars of the electro-hop scene that dominated early 1980s West Coast hip hop, and their first hit "Surgery" would prominently feature Dr. Dre on the turntables and sell 50,000 copies within the Compton area.[12] Dr. Dre and DJ Yella also performed mixes for local radio station KDAY, boosting ratings for its afternoon rush-hour show The Traffic Jam.[13] Dr. Dre's earliest recordings were released in 1994 on a compilation titled Concrete Roots. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of the website Allmusic described the compiled music, released "several years before Dre developed a distinctive style", as "surprisingly generic and unengaging" and "for dedicated fans only".[14]

One thing - theres a famous clip doing the rounds on youtube of dre at about 6 years old being interviewed on some TV show...anyone know about this, was he famous before? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.29.64.94 (talk) 18:01, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

It should be noted that his first recordings were **not** released in 1994... That doesn't make any sense. They would have been released in 1984. By 1994 he was already done with NWA and had released the Chronic.

Hood Surgeon Page?

I find it very odd that there is no page on Hood Surgeon. He is obviously notable enough, so it would be good if someone who knows what they are doing could create one. I would do it but I'm not sure I would know how to do everything properly and the page would probably end up getting deleted. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.179.241.152 (talk) 04:08, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

More Eminem stuff?

I feel like there should be a bit more about his production work with Eminem, perhaps in the "Focus on Production" section. I added in an earlier section that he produced the break-out hit "My Name Is", but shouldn't there be something about his production on MMLP at least, seeing as he (co)produced six tracks including the lead single and it was a hugely successful album which won a Grammy? Also, he (co)/produced about half the songs on Encore, so surely that should get a mention. And later on it should probably say that he's handling the bulk of production on Relapse, as that's a hugely anticipated album. I don't want to flood the article with Eminem-related info. but I think Dre's work with him is notable enough to feature a bit more prominently. His new album coming out in 2012 is called "Schmegma."

Thoughts? ElijahReno (talk) 06:43, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

I'd largely agree with this. Dre arguably launched Eminem's career, who (without hyperbole) is one of the best-selling rap artists ever. Dre also executively produced all of Eminem's albums, which have gone multi platinum in a number of countries. It's understandable that Dre has been involved in numerous artists' projects, but I feel that this aspect deserves to be a bit more prominent. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 13:36, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Okay, so I went ahead and added basic stuff about his production on Eminem's albums, including a brief half-sentence to say he's doing most of the production for Relapse. Maybe there could be more said about the Dre/Eminem working relationship, but since it's already touched upon in the Work Ethic section (they're fellow perfectionists so get on well) maybe adding more would give undue weight to it. I just thought it was weird that the article mentioned signing Eminem as the "turning point" for Aftermath and then didn't even mention the success of his albums (particularly MMLP) or really give any clue that Dre worked him after the Slim Shady LP. I hope it's a little better now, anyway. ElijahReno (talk) 18:23, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Susan Berg owning all of Dre's recordings...

The article currently states: "Susan Berg, president of Global Music Group, bought Death Row Records for US$24 million in June 2008, making her the owner of all of Dr. Dre's recordings."

The source provided seems to back up this claim: "A bankruptcy court judge ruled that Knight was to auction off Death Row Records and its assets, and the label was sold yesterday for $24 million to the president of Global Music Group, Susan Berg. She is now the owner of all recordings made by Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, Dr. Dre and the late Tupac Shakur."

But that can't be true. Maybe she owns all the recordings those artists made while at Death Row, but surely she can't own literally *all* of their recordings. I mean, she obviously doesn't own anything that Snoop's done on Geffen... That Vibe article must just be sloppily worded, because Berg can't own Dre's Aftermath recordings by purchasing Death Row.

I couldn't find any sources which clarify exactly what Global Music Group got hold of in the deal, but neither did any of them repeat that it'd got all of *anyone's* recordings. I think it should either be clarified to say she owns all of Dre's Death Row recordings (if there's a source to back that up) or the claim should just be removed completely, unless there's a less ambiguous source to confirm it. Sorry for the long ramble for a pretty minor issue, maybe I should have just changed it, but I'm a bit drunk and I might be missing something so I'll wait and see what someone else thinks. ElijahReno (talk) 22:11, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree that it's false, unless Suge Knight happened to own Universal Music Group (which I seriously doubt). I think the confusion comes that UMG distributes for Gobal Music Group, which is very different from ownership. To be honest, the intellectual property would be registered to the company in any case, not the chairwoman. I'll take this out for the moment until we get a better source. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 12:21, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
In the context of Dre's career, this seems a bit irrelevant, but some background on the "Aftermath" of Death Row Records post-Tupac and such can be. --Andrewlp1991 (talk) 21:20, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

sample lyrics

I have just removed a section of "sample lyrics". The reason I removed it is that it seemed like a very arbitrary addition of a few lines of a song and it did not really improve the quality of the article. Also, although it looked correct to me, different persons sometimes can listen to the same lines and hear different things, which is why it's important to always cite a reliable source when quoting lyrics. Shit Popped Off

"In July of 2009 the first official single premiered entitled "The Shit Popped Off" via youtube, like other tracks on Dre's albums, Dre does not rap, but contributes the beat for the song, which is the same as the snippet from the Dr. Pepper commercial. The verses and chorus for "Shit Popped Off" are done respectively by T.I."

It says the single premiered when really it was leaked and isn't even finished the one on youtube is just a demo, its a ghostwritten track made by T.I. just like the recently leaked track ghostwritten by Ludacris or the original demo of the track for Crack A Bottle, they have Eminem, T.I or other rappers rapping Dre's verses for him then Dre will add his vocals to it later, there's a whole lot of these tracks ghostwritten for Dre been put on youtube. Also it says Dre doesn't rap on his albums, since when does Dre not rap on his albums? the way its written makes it seem a bit confusing. Also it says Shit Popped Off is the "Official" single, has this been confirmed as the "official" single? i don't think it has. Siwhat (talk) 00:20, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Relapse 2 Rumored To Be Released November

http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.9675/title.release-date-for-relapse-2-finally-revealed

the question is will Relapse 2 come out before Detox? People were saying Detox was supposed to come out after Before I Self Destruct which comes out September. But if Relapse 2 comes out November i doubt they would release these three albums so close together. 118.90.2.209 (talk) 01:32, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Detox Isn't Coming Out 2009!

There's no official source which has said its coming out in 2009 and there have been no singles or anything for the album and its nearly July. If the album was coming out this year there would be at least a proper release date for it by now or even a single. Until there's an official source saying its coming out in 2009 the release date should just say "TBA". Siwhat (talk) 06:26, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Dr. Dre said that it'll be released after Relapse and Before I Self Destruct. Shady and 50 also said that Dre has finished about a dozen songs. The Dr. Pepper snippet is also promotional. (71.99.12.75 (talk) 06:56, 14 July 2009 (UTC))

Yeah but that was a while ago, Before I Self Destruct album doesn't come out till September, so i guess it should at least say 2010.

Snoop Dogg

In 1996 when Dre forned The Aftermath Snoop was very close to go to Dre's new record label, but he remained in Death Row due to the success of Tha Doggfather. Also when Dre made 2001 album in which Snoop was largely featured, it was rumoured that he was very close to move to Aftermath, but he forned his own Doggystyle Records. Should we add this to the article?--BubbleBabis (talk) 13:08, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

The only productions he made for himself were The Chronic and 2001, two of the most influental and essential hip hop albums of all time.

Please see the introductory paragraph- final sentence.

Subject line is unreferenced opinion and not a fact. Hip-Hop is a living genre, 2001 is barely ten years old. Dr Dre's first solo offering, The Chronic, is much more significant in terms of influence than 2001. The success of The Chronic helped establish the ephemeral dominance of West-Coast gangsta rap and the G-Funk sound.

The sentence should be rewritten to the effect of, "the only productions he made for himself were The Chronic and 2001, both blockbuster successes with the former ushering in a new stylistic approach to Hip-Hop production, the dominance of the G-Funk sound." Tupac as associated act?

I've witnessed several instances of Tupac Shakur being added to the associated acts field. Has Dre collaborated with Tupac beyond "California Love"? --Andrewlp1991 (talk) 21:20, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't think so but the prominence of this collaboration may be enough reason to put it in there. Personally, I think Tupac and Dre aren't very "associated" but that is merely my POV. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 02:00, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
It doesn't belong there. He didn't work with him frequently enough and they weren't even on the same label for very long. ElijahReno (talk) 19:25, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't feel that there oughta be more eminem or tupac in this article. With all do respect this article is about dre! I am however shocked when i see that there's no section dedicated to G-funk! All those small references is not really doin the job! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mortenrobinson (talkcontribs) 21:57, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't belong there, they only released two songs together. I think Nate Dogg, Bishop Lamont and Jay-Z should be added because they work together all the time, especially Bishop Lamont because Bishop is on Dre's label.Siwhat (talk) 06:26, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Tupac absolutely does NOT belong in the associated acts field for Dr. Dre. This is an ongoing problem, which seems to affect rap and R&B artists in particular, where the "Associated acts" field is spammed with one off or otherwise casual collaborations. The idea of "prominence" for a single collaboration is laughable. JBsupreme (talk) 18:31, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Question?

Why can't we add 2Pac as part of the associated acts in Dr. Dre's article? If it wasn't for 2Pac, I believe there wouldn't be Dr. Dre. Save Us.Y2J 18:38, August 4 2009 (UTC)

  • Pardon this aging gangsta rap fan as he wipes away the tears of laughter, but you have it exactly backwards. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with N.W.A? The group that pretty much invented gangsta rap, of which Dre was a member of and which sold millions of albums while 2Pac was still an unknown teenager? Anyway, the specific reason is that they did exactly one song together. They were on the same label and did a "duet" but are hardly "associated acts" the way Dre and Snoop Dogg were for example. Beeblebrox (talk) 16:16, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I've known the N.W.A for a long time. 2Pac produced many of Dr. Dre's songs (when he was actually known around the world). So I'm thinking if it wasn't for each other, they wouldn't be known like they are today. Save Us.Y2J 19:05, August 5 2009 (UTC)
The article and the sources it draws from indicate that Dre left Death Row and formed the Aftermath label at about the same time that 2Pac rose to stardom, and I've never heard mention of 2Pac producing much of Dre's catalog, since Dre himself is a producer, so we would need some new sources if we are going to directly contradict what the article currently says. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:15, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

you must have Tupac confused with someone else, Tupac didn't produce his own songs let along Dre's. Siwhat (talk) 05:18, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

I agree, with no Dr. Dre there would be no 2pac (arguably). The thing with 2pac is, he is rap's biggest star so I see how some people get confused. Some possible corrections for Detox and The Planets (2009–present) section.

Detox is to be Dr. Dre's final album.[65] In 2002, Dre told Corey Moss of MTV News that he intended Detox to be a concept album.[66] Work for the album dates back to early 2004,[67] but later in that year he decided to stop working on the album to focus on producing for other artists, but then changed his mind; the album had initially been set for a fall 2005 release.[68] After several delays, the album was finally scheduled to be released sometime in 2010 by Interscope Records, which had not set a firm release date for the album as of July 2010.[65] Producers confirmed to work on the album include DJ Khalil, Nottz, Bernard "Focus" Edwards Jr.,[69] Hi-Tek,[70] J.R. Rotem,[71] RZA,[72] Jay-Z,[73] Warren G, and Boi-1da.[74] Snoop Dogg claimed that Detox was finished, according to a June 2008 report by Rolling Stone magazine.[75]

After another delay based on producing other artists' work, Detox was scheduled for a 2010 release, coming after 50 Cent's Before I Self Destruct and Eminem's Relapse, an album for which Dr. Dre handled the bulk of production duties.[76][77] Dre appeared in the remix of the song "Set It Off" by Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall (also with Pusha T); the remix debuted on DJ Skee's radio show in December 2008.[78] At the beginning of 2009, Dre produced and made a guest vocal performance on the single "Crack a Bottle" by Eminem. The single sold a record 418,000 downloads in its first week,[79] and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart on the week of February 12, 2009.[80] Along with this single, in 2009 Dr. Dre produced or co-produced 19 of 20 tracks on Eminem's album Relapse. These included other hit singles "We Made You", "Old Time's Sake", and "3 a.m." (the only track Dre didn't produce was the Eminem produced single "Beautiful").

In a Dr Pepper commercial that debuted on May 28, 2009, Dr. Dre premiered the first official snippet of Detox.[81][82] 50 Cent and Eminem asserted in an interview on BET's 106 & Park that Dr. Dre had around a dozen songs finished for Detox.[83] Detox is likely to be released sometime in 2011.[84]

The album was scheduled to be released in 2010, after the announcement of the first single, "Under Pressure" was being released soon.[85] An unfinished version of the single hit the internet on June 16, 2010.[86] The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers will honor Dr. Dre with its Founders Award for inspiring other musicians.[87]

In an August 2010 interview, Dr. Dre stated that an instrumental album titled The Planets was in its first stages of production; each song being named after a planet in the Solar System.[88] On September 3, Dr. Dre showed support to longtime protégé Eminem, and appeared on his and Jay-Z's Home & Home Tour, performing hit songs such as "Still D.R.E.," "Nuthin' But A G Thang," and "Crack A Bottle," alongside Eminem and another protégé, 50 Cent. Sporting a "R.I.P. Proof Shirt," Dre was honored by Eminem telling Detroit's Comerica Park to do the same. They did so, by chanting "DEEE-TOX," to which he replied, "I'm coming!."[89]

Dr. Dre has released two singles for Detox: "Kush" and "I Need a Doctor" in September 2010 and February 2011 respectfully. "Kush" has become a top 40 hit in the Unitied States and "I Need a Doctor" is expected to chart high once it impacks Billboard. The album is expected to be released in April 2011.

Second last paragraph under the heading of "Detox and The Planets (2009–present)"

"Kush" has become a top 40 hit in the Unitied States and "I Need a Doctor" is expected to chart high once it impacks Billboard. The album is expected to be released in April 2011.

did raekwon really sign to and leave aftermath?

The article states: "Other noteworthy acts to leave Aftermath without releasing albums include King Tee, 2001 vocalist Hittman, Joell Ortiz, Raekwon and Rakim.[119]"

This is definitely true for Rakim but I'm not sure about Raekwon. I never heard of him signing to Aftermath, as far as I know Dre simply committed to contributing several beats to the OB4CL2 album and that the two stopped collaborating after recording only two; they largely cited conflicting schedules. 96.246.39.61 (talk) 02:56, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Who is Curtis Young's Mother??!

Seriously, this is going on 3 years now...towards the beginning of this article, under Early Life, it states, "Young fathered a son, Curtis, born December 15, 1981, with Lisa Johnson." but then under Personal Life later in the article it says, "Dr. Dre's eldest son is named Curtis Young, whose mother is Cassandra Joy Greene."

Under "Musical influences and style" paragraph two, sentence three, there is a conflicting statement. Not only does About.com rate (Dr. Dre #2 (tied with Pete Rock) on their "Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers" list), but they also rate him as being 3rd and 5th.

I recommend that this statement be omitted from the article for lack of creditability, and because it is a non-factual "an opinion", not a factual statement.

{{edit semi-protected}} Dr. Dre signed Eminem and 50 Cent to his record label in 1996 and 2003 respectively while contributing production on their albums.

Eminem was signed to Dr. Dre's label in 1999, not 1996. 1999 was when the 'Slim Shady LP' was produced. In 1996, Eminem was still an unknown artist. The dates may have been confused because Eminem released his first album, 'Infinite', in 1996, under WEB Entertainment, not Aftermath (Dr. Dre's label).

Done Okay, I was a bit bold and changed it to 2012 with the twitter ref. mabdul 13:32, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

The source for this [4] is in Italian. It does briefly discuss fakes, but I can't find any specific reference to the lawsuit or the company "SacrementoMusic". My Italian isn't the best though.

I can't find any sources [5] [6] [7] relating to the lawsuit against "SacrementoMusic" or the company itself (and I wonder if it deserves its own section - I'm sure counterfeiting of these headphones is common and Monster takes appropriate action where it can. I feel this particular case would be notable only if the $5m annual loss can be cited).

Regardless, if the section is to stay, it needs some grammatical improvement, which I'll insert soon if there's no objections. Isaelie (talk) 12:49, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

After thinking a bit, I've decided to cut the entire section. I don't feel this lawsuit merits its own section unless it can be reliably sourced. If we're going to mention financial losses due to counterfeiting, I'd like it to be related to Dr Dre's products and not counterfeiting in general. At the moment I can't find any sources that support that, although I'd certainly welcome the section back if it can be sourced. Isaelie (talk) 15:24, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Does anyone know about these "Chroniclez" (with that z on the end) albums ?

I got a notification from a new album reminder service today that there's a new Dre album out today called "The Detox Chroniclez Vol.6". I looked on Amazon and found it, but there was no track listing and no reviews. I saw also Vol. 1-5 there. But no information. When I search in wikipedia, the word Chroniclez doesn't appear anywhere, and a google search just gives a bunch of dodgy links. Any idea what these are ? 84.155.166.224 (talk) 10:54, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, it's kind of a Detox preview, it mainly consists of tracks that haven't made it to Detox and remixes of older recorded songs, when I first heard about it, I thought it should of been worth mentioning on here. Kane (talk) 00:05, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Powerbeats

Under Entrepreneurship, it mentions his Beats line of headphones. It lists the different models, but is missing the Powerbeats over-the-ear, exercise earbuds. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Modred189 (talkcontribs) 22:35, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

The article fails to give due WP:WEIGHT to Beats. Quoting Forbes "The bulk of Dr. Dre’s wealth comes from his involvement in Beats Electronics" and unfortunately this is not made clear anywhere in the article or even in the Entrepreneurship section of the article. The article fails to make it clear that although he is famous for Hiphop and is the richest hip hop artist that his that the bulk of his wealth did not come from hip hop (at least not directly).
I'd have made an effort to fix this oversight but the article is locked. The article as it stands is misleading and needs to be corrected, preferably in both the intro/lead and Entrepreneurship sections.
On a more general note it would be better prose style and be more encyclopedic if they article didn't say "50 Cent tweeted" and instead just used "50 Cent said" or "50 Cent announced" etc., as there is no need to draw unnecessary attention to the source or medium used, just as there would be no need to say "50 Cent said on MTV" or "50 Cent told the New York Times". More than enough to mention the source in the references, and keep the prose simple and direct. -- 109.78.212.246 (talk) 21:20, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

"Production work, The Planets, a break, and Coachella"

I think the word "hiatus" should replace "a break" since that sounds rather unprofessional. At very least, the article should say "break," per MOS:HEAD.

On another note, I believe there should be an effort to convert the 2008 section to better prose formatting (check out WP:PROSE).

Drum equalization clarity

The sentence below could use revision. The grammar seems off, likely because the second to after the comma is supposed to be the, although "the same drum sounds but sound differently" doesn't seem to make much sense either.

"Dr. Dre also stresses the importance of equalizing drums properly, and admits to using to same drum sounds but sound differently to other listeners due to strong equalization during the audio mixing process when a record is produced."

Violence

This paragraph appears in the 'Violence against women' section:

Dr. Dre pled guilty in October 1992 in a case of battery of a police officer and was convicted on two additional battery counts stemming from a brawl in the lobby of the New Orleans hotel in May 1991.

However, I've not been able to clarify if the police officer was male or female. If male perhaps the section should just be title 'Violence'.Jonpatterns (talk) 11:10, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

@Jonpatterns: I am confused -- and have to take your comment suggesting the section be renamed to delete reference of women as somewhat of a joke. The ONLY reason I have recently edited this page is because of the massive amounts of press that has come up about N.W.A. and Dre's issues with violence against women. The gender of the police person is not the issue here. Actually I am going to move it, separating it from the current section. The issues Dre had over the years is repeated behavior. It should stay, the heading, in my opinion. BrillLyle (talk) 16:18, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Religious/spiritual views?

The article has zero information about his religious/spiritual views (or lack thereof). A glaring omission, as most biographical articles include this important information. I would like to put in more information regarding the Dr. Dre assault with Dee Barnes. The information I would like to include is the date when and where the said assault happened. Also the amount of money that was involved in the lawsuit.

I would like to change the paragraph to read like this:

On January 27th 1991, at a music industry party a the Po Na Na Souk club in Hollywood, Dr. Dre assaulted television host Dee Barnes of the Fox television program Pump it Up, because he felt dissatisfied with her news report about the feud between the remaining N.W.A members and Ice Cube.[156] "Barnes filed a lawsuit for 22 million dollars" Subsequently, Dr. Dre was fined $2,500 and given two years' probation and 240 hours of community service, as well as a spot on an anti-violence public service announcement on television and 24 months of probation.[5]:27[157] The civil suit was settled out of court.[158]

The changes that I would like to be made are above in quotations.

Add songwriter to occupation. If you were to check on The Chronic, 2001 (Dr. Dre album) and Compton (album) you would see that Dr. Dre (credited in his real name of Andre Young) has songwriting credits on all of his tracks; wouldn't that be enough of a reason to why it isn't already on his page? On January 5, 2020, it was reported that Dr. Dre suffered a brain aneurysm and was admitted to the ICU at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. 99.137.212.15 (talk) 02:06, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Feud between dr.dre with 2pac shortly before 2pacs death

Requesting it to be added due to locked article. If you're a dr.dre fan you might not want to do this, so perhaps someone impartial should add it. By the way, this was BIG in the day, this fued between Tupac and dr.dre before Tupacs death.

2Pac and Suge Knight bashed on dr.dre for being gay and it is not mentioned.

Proof

End of the song Tupacs song "To live and die in LA" Tupac remarks "L.A., "California Love" part mothafuckin' two Without gay ass Dre"

Lyrics from Tupacs song 'Toss it up'

"No longer Dre Day: arrivederci

Blown and forgotten, rotten for plotting Child’s Play

Check your sexuality, as fruity as this Alize

Quick to jump ship, punk trick, what a dumb move

Cross Death Row, now who you gonna run to?"

Missing album from discography.

This page is missing an Dr.Dre album. Concrete Roots released in 1994. 73.61.13.116 (talk) 16:33, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

Here is the link to the missing album on Wikipedia. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concrete_Roots I would edit the page myself but i don't have an account and the page is protected. 73.61.13.116 (talk) 16:36, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

That's because it's not a Dr Dre album but rather a compilation of songs produced by the good doctor. Robvanvee 19:51, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

The contract EP

Why is it not added? It is an important project and it's been out for a while now 189.176.6.35 (talk) 18:16, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

Was not able to edit article

I was not able to edit this article, as it appears to be locked from editing. However, it should be added that, on the 65th Annual Grammy Awards (on February 5, 2023), Dr. Dre was awarded the first-ever Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. 76.190.213.189 (talk) 03:47, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

POV problems

I came across this article while cleaning up poor and unreliable sources. While doing so I noticed puffery and questionable details in the lede, and promotional information and presentation in the article body.

I was considering reverting these edits completely, but chose to tag the article instead. @DBrown SPS: --Hipal (talk) 18:42, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

@Hipal: I'm here and I received your opinion. What do I need to revert on Dr. Dre? Anything and I'll do so ASAP. Darrion "Beans" Brown 🙂 (my talk page / my sandbox) 19:14, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
Of the remaining references that were added, do they meet the standards required by WP:BLP? --Hipal (talk) 19:21, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
I don't think they do. But they only have small statements in references from unexpected sources I found. Darrion "Beans" Brown 🙂 (my talk page / my sandbox) 02:54, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
Okay. Just re-edited the whole project: here. Go ahead and see for yourself. See how it looks now. Darrion "Beans" Brown 🙂 (my talk page / my sandbox) 03:04, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
That makes no changes to the lede at all. I think it would be best to revert the lede, and discuss anything that looks like it should be restored. --Hipal (talk) 03:30, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
I think I got it a bit. Darrion "Beans" Brown 🙂 (my talk page / my sandbox) 13:04, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

I've gone ahead and reverted the lede. Let's discuss any changes that are needed. Looking at the first two sentences:

  • First sentence: Should "entrepreneur" be removed? Glancing over the article, I'm for it's removal.
  • Second sentence:
"He is the founder and CEO of Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics, and previously co-founded, co-owned, and was the president of Death Row Records."
vs "He is the co-founder of Beats Electronics, which had been acquired in 2014 for $3.4 billion by technology giant Apple Inc. He is also the founder and CEO of Aftermath Entertainment after previously co-forming and owning Death Row Records."
The bit about Apple seems to be WP:UNDUE and WP:PUFFERY. Singling out Beats Electronics seems UNDUE. --Hipal (talk) 19:44, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
It doesn't matter. All it matters is the opening statements are restructured to clean. You did better. Darrion "Beans" Brown 🙂 (my talk page / my sandbox) 20:25, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
I've replaced some of the recently removed references. The article states "Accusations of Dre's violence against women have been widely publicized", and that seems like a substantial and broad claim that demands substantial and broad references. The removal also deleted a reference definition that was used elsewhere in the article, so the resulting error is fixed by reinstating the references. I did not bring back the medium.com reference, but brought a couple more from the hip-hop and music media because they seem reliable and trustworthy. -- Mikeblas (talk) 20:35, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the help, Mikeblas. If there is still anything (anything at all) I have also missed by error on Dr. Dre or left unsourced, please do not hesitate to discuss with me. I'll review and try to fix it or somebody may do that. 17:10, 2 December 2022 (UTC) Darrion "Beans" Brown 🙂 (my talk page / my sandbox) 17:10, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

So should the {{POV}} tag & banner now be removed from the top of the article page? Have all issues been addressed? Cheers. 98.155.8.5 (talk) 18:06, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
