Digitization and digitalization should be split. Digitalization can be the process of digitizing (digitization), administration of digitalis [1], or the integration of digital tools and media into everyday life. [2] [3] Only the first meaning is currently covered.

Scott Brennen and Daniel Kreiss writes: "We follow this distinction in this article and define digitization as the material process of converting individual analogue streams of information into digital bits. In contrast, we refer to digitalization as the way in which many domains of social life are restructured around digital communication and media infrastructures. In the pages that follow, we discuss these distinct, yet interrelated, concepts." [4]

Uwe Riss at SAP SE said that "At SAP we’ve done digitization for many decades... Now we are on the way to digitalization, which is different." [5]
