Spelling

[edit]

Bread Ninja, while you can have your latest "-ize" change I just wanted to note that it was spelled already correctly. Can I ask that you don't do changes like that any more for the sake of language peace? MOS:ENGVAR states that

the English Wikipedia does not prefer any major national variety of the language. No variant is inherently more correct than another.

You probably should also read American_and_British_English_spelling_differences#-ise.2C_-ize_.28-isation.2C_-ization.29... Thanks! --Mikitei (talk) 17:33, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The most common usage in english is with an Z and often with an S the computer will automatically note it incorrect. Its not a matter of nationality.Bread Ninja (talk) 17:36, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Software spell checkers do not necessarily know how to spell correctly and you should always keep in mind that spell checkers are just "stupid tools" for pointing out possible problems. They don't know if it is actually a problem or not. If you just used spell checker then it was a situation where both ways are correct but spell checker didn't know about that. Spell checker was programmed to check against American English which only accepts the "-ize" form. So it reported it as a incorrect spelling even if it was correct. Spell checkers usually default to American English which makes this a matter of nationality. Anyway... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". ;) --Mikitei (talk) 17:49, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
depends.....either way, no use reverting it. if English is set to default to "American" English, than despite it being American it's the most common use. Articles are being named Color instead of colour or such. it's not a big deal. the pronunciation sure does seems to have a "z" sound than a "s".Bread Ninja (talk) 17:58, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The way things are pronounced depends on nationality. American English is not the only english and I personally prefer British English over clumsy and old sounding American English. For example when I watch BBC News I hear more "-ise" than "-ize" sound there. Also in (just an example) BBC Wikipedia article "-ise" form is most common. And there are both American and British English article titles around. But yeah. This isn't a big deal but I might some day turn over some change because of something like this... --Mikitei (talk) 18:09, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
you lean too much toward personal preferences.Bread Ninja (talk) 18:15, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe in situations where Wikipedia guides do not define general directions at all. Everybody follows their personal preferences in that kind of situations. And please note that I just leaned towards Wikipedia guidelines when you leaned towards your personal preference in this article. ;_; But can we drop this here and not progress any further? I think I got my message through to you. Thanks. --Mikitei (talk) 18:31, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If it happens again ignore it, as its only to avoid spelling mistakes or such. problem is you assumed it was out of mere preferences when it was just to avoid spelling errors through. I still stick to the guideline, or to the idea when the rules start to get vague. you should do the same.Bread Ninja (talk) 00:17, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just what is your problem here? I just explained that it can be both ways and you start mumbling about something else. By default British English uses "-ise". and American English uses "-ize". Both "recognize" and "recognise" have the same meaning and are worth the same and are both equally correct. American English doesn't accept "-ise". My spell checker is defaulting to British English. Wikipedia states that all varieties of English are equal. Why are you trying to turn this into a another debate? You did the change because you're citizen of United States and thought it was misspelled when it was perfectly correct. Please refrain from doing changes like that in future. And why are you explaining in last sentence something I just explained to you earlier? Why aren't you following those principles your proudly claim as yours? --Mikitei (talk) 09:03, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

and where and how did i not follow my own advice? If i see something seemingly misspelled, I'll change it. there are more things that they change. my problem is you needing to make a conversation out of something like this. But other than the constant arguments we had in the past, and no room for you to even. If it happens, it's not my intention to use american. So it's best to ignore it. Similar to how many put disc instead of disk despite both being equally the same. because one is more common than the other.Bread Ninja (talk) 09:09, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When I wrote that both ways are correct and asked you to stick with Wikipedia guides that all variants of English are equal. You started implying to me how American English is "more correct" than others. Problem is that "recognise" was not misspelled word. Disc/Disk is actually good example but its too good since "Disk" almost always, no matter what variant of English we are talking about, means a "Diskette" while "Disc" refers to a "Compact Disc" based media. But you're right that both forms are correct for both subjects. And this is not about which word is more used than the other. If we are writing British English of course we use "-ise" since it's most used. If we take a look and Google about it we would use American English "-ize" since most people out there are using American English in the web. And that's also one of the reasons I am not reverting your change. But instead of saying that you should leave room for other varieties of English. --Mikitei (talk) 10:06, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

pretty simple. don't insult me. And i wont have a problem. right now despite how much info u found. i can't take u seriously in a discussion. if you want that to change, than maybe stop talking about me. it's unprofessional. If i talk about you, i say it directly to you and about wikipedia, not about irrelevant topics that seem to make up some dumb point.Bread Ninja (talk) 09:18, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it was you who insulted me first... OK, If you say so that you don't have a problem then you probably don't have a problem. That was important for me to know since after what you wrote in negative tone of yours it seemed like you're making huge thing about this. By the way. Isn't the clock there something like 4 AM? How come you're still awake? O.o --Mikitei (talk) 10:06, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
you should really care about things such as time. And i guarantee you i can easily prove who started it. Feeling insulted maybe on your part, but you're the one who actually throws the insults. Yeah i get tired of you, and yeah i show it off and get frustrated. One thing for sure, i didn't call you any names. And whats really gets me angry is a non-native speaker and apparently following British English constantly telling me my "english" is bad. Ever thought I'm more of a casual speaker? if i edit it thinking it was a spelling error but just a different version, then oh well. we shouldn't put in countless reverts. And i don't do it because that's the way American english does it. willing to start over with you? questionable....you say you want to work. like i said, you want this to work, you stop. I don't continuously tell others how stupid your reasoning is, or complain about your tone, or how you constantly lecture me things, you yourself don't take to heart. It's like your mind is warped to thinking everything you say is right. Bread Ninja (talk) 10:19, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking that maybe you're tired and not thinking things out clearly. I can as well prove who started it. I started this thread but you started throwing the insults. I can honestly say that I am not sure what to you about you anymore. You didn't call me any names but that's not the point here. You think you're in higher position than I am when the truth is that we are both equal position. I am lecturing you because based on text you produce you don't know about these things. I've studied English for more than 15 years and I can read, write and speak it on an advanced level. But I still don't consider myself an expert. However from my point of view your English is bad. For example even your first sentence in your previous comment...

"you should really care about things such as time"

...is most likely misspelled. I guess you wanted to say "You really shouldn't care about such a thing as time". You should admit to yourself that you're not good at writing clear English. Your text is highly annoying to read because your intended message can be interpreted in way too many ways. And since you're writing about topics where knowing exactly what you wanted to say is important this really hurts value of your message. That's why I am complaining about it. Don't take it as a insult while thinking that you don't have any issues with your written language. Besides what did you even want to say with this previous message of yours? Most of it is just gibberish... I know that I am not a perfect all-knowing being. I am human. I make mistakes. But I am also an educated person. And sometimes I have to say to you things average person probably would know about surrounding world which you're not aware of based on how you support your opinions. I do it because that way you might be able to better understand my views on the topic. We might be able to reach an agreement too, after doing so... --Mikitei (talk) 12:36, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Your views are slightly more bias. And please i beg you to look that up, because i highly doubt you do know exactly what i mean. When i say you're commercial bias, do you ever defend your reasoning? no, you ignore it and continue to say the same. You don't even consider it. if you did you knew what it was, you would've immediately agreed from the start just by looking back on how you presented your reasons. that quote you did..i still stand by it. there's no grammar issues, you just need to catch on quicker. yeah its a bit vague, but maybe you have hard time understand a casual speaker. my English is fine. AND i do take it as an insult as you've intended to insult me the past multiple times. Only this time you actually trying not to......but like I'd actually give you that chance now. An educated person, i think we're all educated to some degree. So it's not really much...I already understand your views. But you're too liberal when it comes to vague situations where specific rules don't apply.
You realize you've ignored most of my points before. not some, not half, but most. Whenever i make a decent point to get my point of view across, it gets ignored and you say yours. i already know yours. I mean i already see a grammar issue in your comment, but i got the idea and i'm not going to bash you about it. English only matters inside the article when there are grammatical errors or odd wording. when discussing, as long as the idea gets across, that's what matters. You are the only one who complains about my english, and from the looks of it, you're not even a a native speaker. Another thing you say most of what i say is gibberish. DO you honestly believe this is going to work, if comments like yours keep on going?Bread Ninja (talk) 13:12, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Don't you remember anything at all you read? Besides calling me "commercially biased" is not only a insult but also accusation which you cannot prove. You've called me that many times and I don't have to give the same reply every time you do so. Go back to one of those previous threads and you'll find my reply which you can read every time you want my reply to you on that matter. Besides why did you lift this again? Last time you went silent about this when I replied to you and stayed so a little while until you started this again... And loop was ready. Which in turn leads me to believe (again) that you're trolling me with this talk about me being "commercially biased".
I say that you're bad at English because I want you to improve your text so that it becomes more understandable. And I can prove that you're bad with writing English. For example your first sentence in previous comment has misspelled word. It's not "bias" but "biased" because you're probably referring to actions in past. It's also contains bad style. And it probably needs a tense too. So you actually probably wanted to say "Your views are now slightly more biased than before." But this is one of those things which can be interpreted many ways since you're not writing exactly what you want to say. I don't need to "catch quicker", you need to start learning to write proper English. As long as you're lying to yourself this problem won't solve itself.
And as for your "maybe you have hard time understand a casual speaker" bit I have to reply that I have British friends and I occasionally talk with them on Skype. I also follow BBC and watch Hollywood movies and TV-series. I practically read and listen English almost daily (however I don't speak English daily basis since there isn't opportunity to do so). I don't think that I have problem with a casual English speaker. If I do have that problem, it isn't a major. That is being strongly supported by the fact that at the moment you're the only person I have communication problems. Fact is that your English isn't "fine" and when I usually complain about it I do so because I didn't properly understand what you wanted to say in your last comment. Which in turn leads to comments where I cannot fully reply to all your points. Besides written and spoken languages are two different things. When you're writing a comment to Wikipedia you aren't supposed to write like you talk. You also had to change your previous comment multiple times and still it isn't "fine".
I can also safely say to you that you're way too conservative and don't think things properly through.
I have to say to you, Bread Ninja, that this is my final reply to you in this thread since we already talked about the main issue and I guess you're now aware of it. --Mikitei (talk) 11:31, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Casualness in text is hard to read for non-native speakers. when speaking in skype it's different. don't expect text to be the same as actually hearing someone. And i don't care. it's bad grammar, not bad English. And yeah, i insulted you, just as you did to me, but wait....who threw the first one? you did, who threw the last one? oh wait, it's still you. ANd if you don't "understand" then say so. not that hard. Next time you say my english is bad, i'm not going to believe it. if you said my grammar was bad, yes. But it's not as if everyone needs to be perfect when speaking, and the stuff you talk about is really simple stuff to ignore. I've ignored yours. so next time, drop it. you get the point, I KNOW you do. If you didn't you would've asked for clarification, and if you didn't and didn't bother to ask for clarification, than that's a fault on your part.

You're not helping anyone if all you say my english is bad. than what good are you? i brought it up because i wanted to end that discussion. but it pisses me off that you still go on. trying to take the last word and such.Bread Ninja (talk) 12:02, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

here are some interviews i found that are quite helpful for making this article to start class. Most of it can be added into the development section, but i highly recommend only adding in key-information. Things such as them originally planning on having all western songs, or adding the engine of DJMax Black Square onto DJ Max fever, so on and so forth. these are just examples. For the most part each one says similar things but fortunately there is unique info not all of them have. [[1]], [[2]], [[3]]
