What was the role of the Supreme Court of Judicature prior to 1 October 2009? Was it the court of last appeal for Northern Ireland, or was that the House of Lords ("Supreme" being a misnomer)? ISTR the latter is the case, but I'm not certain enough to change the article. Hairy Dude (talk) 23:15, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The House of Lords was always superior. The name "Supreme Court" was introduced by the Supreme Court of Judicature Act (Ireland) 1877 imitating the reform in England. The English Act created a Supreme Court of Judicature and abolished appeal to the House of Lords, so "Supreme" was appropriate. The Liberals were turned out of office before the change took place though and the new Parliament repealed the abolition, so we had a Supreme Court of Judicature that was not supreme, and the same terminology was carried over to Ireland.
