TV coverage section
[edit]Is this section really needed here? It only refers to the broadcast in one country, and is more trivia than encyclopedic. It might be appropriate at, say, 2016 in American television or Olympics on NBC but hardly seems necessary here? -- Whats new?(talk) 03:43, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- Agree. It's trivial.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:58, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- Would you two have the same objections if it instead develops into something closer like 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony#TV coverage and 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony#Television coverage, where content on other broadcasters are added? I mean this entire article is not yet as developed as the 2012 and 2014 articles yet. Zzyzx11 (talk) 07:37, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- Personally, I think it is far too much detail for this article. I fully support it being included in the articles I mentioned in my original comment, but it doesn't seem relevant here, particularily for a global audience. I'd be comfortable with a sentence or two summary and a further information or main article link. -- Whats new?(talk) 09:31, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- Well, there's a new wrinkle to the US TV controversy. lowest opening ceremony ratings since 1992. Also, this section goes mainly by the precedent of the 2012 article. ViperSnake151 Talk 05:06, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
- Again, more suitable for inclusion on 2016 in American television and Olympics on NBC. -- Whats new?(talk) 02:49, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

- Looks like some mention of NBC's coverage got back in: it currently is embedded into the Critical reception section. Zzyzx11 (talk) 17:46, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Country names
[edit]In the "Officials and guests" section, there is only a country flag, name of the official and their designation. Presently, the only way to know which country the person is from, is by hovering the mouse on top of the country flag, and looking at the link name on the status bar. The names of countries should be made visible, such as "(president of Argentina)" instead of a simple "(president)". Vedabit (talk) 06:30, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- To write "president of Argentina" when there's clearly an Argentian national flag by the side, would be redundant. Inimesh (talk) 07:56, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Replace anthems with Music section
[edit]The current section is a waste of time. It should have a cited list of all the songs that were used across the entire ceremony in order of appearance. ViperSnake151 Talk 22:44, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- I think that's a great idea, the model being the article on the 2012 opening ceremony. MikeLynch (talk) 20:36, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Personnel
[edit]The "Personnel" section adds nothing to the article as it is; it's just a list of occupations that are needed for any performance, and the first two need to be disambiguated. Will anyone object if I delete the section? It can always be added back (with details!) later. — Gorthian (talk) 01:00, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
- Totally agree Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 12:19, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Any Sources Detailing the Reasons for Engenhao Not Hosting Ceremonies?
[edit]Was there ever an explanation as to why the Engenhão Olympic Stadium (named after Joao Havelange at the time of the 2016 Olympics, now named after Nilton Santos) couldn't host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2016 Olympics? I couldn't find any sources explaining the reasons for the decision to put the ceremonies at the Maracanã. This could probably be asked on the talk page for the Games' closing ceremony as well. The "Venue" section of this article should be detailing the reasons, if any, for this decision instead of a straight copying-and-pasting of a paragraph from the Maracana Stadium article.Jim856796 (talk) 02:56, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
