Unix
[edit]what's the relationship to System V packages as used on Solaris? The current article should certainly be extended with facts. --62.216.216.100 (talk) 19:24, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- You mean System V Release 4 (SVR4) packages, as that format was introduced in SVR4. It's used in Solaris 2 and later because SunOS 5 is SVR4-derived. The article mentions that format as one of the formats for which the .pkg extension is used. Guy Harris (talk) 17:19, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
Could be a directory (bundle)
[edit]Another thing that should be observed is that an installer-ish item with .pkg extension on a Mac system may well be a bundle — a file system directory which is merely shown as an atomic item by the Finder — rather than an actual file. In this case, there's no file format to speak of since there is no stream of bytes to read. On the other hand, it is then perfectly possible to cd into the bundle and look at the contents that way. 130.243.83.153 (talk) 15:03, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
