Korop (Ukrainian: Короп) is a selyshche (larger rural settlement) in Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion, Chernihiv Oblast, northern Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Korop settlement hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine.[1] Population is 4,490 (2022 estimate).[2]

Name

[edit]

The name of the settlement means "carp" in Ukrainian, and the fish is present in the coat of arms and flag of the settlement.

History

[edit]

Korop cited first in hetman's Ostrianytsia universal statement in 1638. Many pre-historic settlements, dated to the 3rd to 5th centuries and the 10th to 13th centuries have been discovered near Korop.

Until 18 July 2020, Korop was the administrative center of Korop Raion. The raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Chernihiv Oblast to five. The area of Korop Raion was merged into Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion.[3][4]

Until 26 January 2024, Korop was designated urban-type settlement. On this day, a new law entered into force which abolished this status, and Korop became a rural settlement.[5]
