John D Wood & Co. is a UK Estate agent, established in London in 1872.

History

[edit]

John D Wood & Co. is a prominent UK estate agency, established in 1872 by John Daniel Wood at the age of 23[1]. The company's inaugural office was located at No. 6 Mount Street in Mayfair, directly opposite the Connaught Hotel. Initially focused on high-end residential properties, the firm gained significant traction around the turn of the century and continued to thrive in the post-World War I era, frequently handling major transactions involving notable estates such as Dorchester House (now the Dorchester Hotel), Leeds Castle in Kent, and Parham Park in Sussex. Advertising efforts during this period included placements on the back page of The Times and in Country Life magazine.

In 1930, John D Wood & Co. relocated its headquarters to Berkeley Square, where it remained until the late 1980s. The 1950s and 1960s marked a shift towards commercial and development projects, culminating in a pivotal expansion into the central London residential market with the opening of the Chelsea Green sales office in 1966. This growth established John D Wood & Co. as a leader in residential real estate, leading to a network of offices throughout London and the South of England.

In 1982, the company underwent a structural change, separating its commercial operations under the name 'John D Wood' while retaining 'John D Wood & Co.' for its residential and agricultural services. The latter was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1987. Following this transition, John D Wood & Co. experienced substantial growth as a public limited company (plc), leveraging modern technology to enhance client services. In 1997, it was acquired by Countrywide plc, which further expanded its reach.

The company's international department was established in 2015 to collaborate with overseas partners, and in 2016, it expanded through mergers with Faron Sutaria and Fitz-Gibbon, as well as acquisitions of APW, CHK Mountford, and Vanet Property Asset Management.

Most recently, in 2021, John D Wood & Co. was acquired by Connells Group, now recognized as the UK's largest estate agency and property services provider[2]. Today, John D Wood & Co. operates as one of Connells' key estate agency brands, boasting a network of approximately 30 offices across London and the South of England, along with over 2,000 affiliated international partner offices.

In 2022, John D Wood & Co. marked a significant milestone by relocating its headquarters to a new office in London[3]. The move, which reflects the company's growth and commitment to enhancing its services, was celebrated with a formal opening event attended by staff and stakeholders. The new headquarters is designed to foster collaboration and innovation, aligning with John D Wood & Co.'s strategy to strengthen its position in the real estate market. This relocation is seen as a pivotal step in the company's ongoing development and expansion within the property sector.
