Gan Rui (Chinese: 甘锐; born 11 January 1985) is a Chinese former professional footballer who played as a midfielder, most notably for Chengdu Rongcheng, whom he captained during the club's rise from the fourth tier of Chinese football to the top-flight.
Club career
[edit]In 2005, Gan Rui started his professional footballer career with Chongqing Lifan in the Chinese Super League.[1] He would eventually make his league debut for Chongqing on 11 March 2006 in a game against Liaoning Whowin, which ended in a 2-1 victory.[2] Unfortunately by the end of the season he was part of the team that was relegated at the end of the season.[3] He would remain with the club as they eventually gained promotion back into the top tier at the end of the 2008 campaign.[4]
On 26 February 2015, Gan transferred to China League Two side Nanjing Qianbao.[5] On 8 January 2016 the club relocated to the city of Chengdu and he would move with them as they renamed themselves Chengdu Qbao.[6] Chengdu Qbao withdrew from League Two in 2018 when the Qbao Group was under investigation with illegal fund raising.[7] On 20 March 2018, a phoenix club was formed by Chengdu Better City Investment Group Co., Ltd. and Gan would join them as they participated in the 2018 Chinese Champions League.[8] He would go on to win promotion with the club as they came runners-up at the end of the 2019 China League Two season.[9] He would captain the team as he aided them to a meteoric rise through the divisions as the club gained promotion to the top tier at the end of the 2021 league campaign.[10]
