Dessau is an unincorporated community in Travis County, in the U.S. state of Texas.[1] It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area.

History

[edit]

Dessau was named for Dessau in Germany. There was a post office there from 1886 to 1890 and from 1897 to 1901, when service was halted and mail was diverted to Austin. In the late 1890s, Dessau's population was estimated to be 30. By the early 1930s, it had decreased to 10, but by the late 1940s, it had increased to 50, where it remained until the middle of the 1960s, when population numbers were not available. In 1990, Dessau was still referred to as a community.[2] and today the area is home to more than 49,000 people.

Geography

[edit]

Dessau is located 11 mi (18 km) northeast of Austin and 2 mi (3.2 km) southwest of Pflugerville in northeastern Travis County.[2]

Education

[edit]

In 1907, Dessau had a school with one teacher and 40 students. It joined the Pflugerville Independent School District in 1920.[2] Schools that serve the community are Delco Primary School, Dessau Elementary School, Dessau Middle School, and John B. Connally High School.
