Habermas Commentary/Topics

[edit source]

Habermas Commentary/Topics is stubby because it is list of topics in the fledgling Habermas Commentary. I'm not sure it deserves a {{qr-em}}. I prematurely removed it, but then reinstated it because I don't want to create a culture of reversions / (in an extreme) edit wars. Sorry... :( --Iamunknown 06:24, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Signatures

[edit source]

Hey Herby, you seem to be in touch with all the technical stuff (since you told me about the monobook stuff) so I figured I'd ask you, how did you change your signature? I'd like to change mine so that it includes a link to my talk page, nothing fancy, just maybe a (talk) link or something of that sort. I like how you set yours up too, it's always fascinating to me how people personalize their pages and such. Good luck and regards. Mattb112885 18:50, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cross wiki vandals

[edit source]

I think it's logical to block IP's which are blocked for long time on Wikipedia. Wikipedia admins don't make long lasting blocks if they are not sure they are blocking the right person. We don't risk much blocking such IP's here. --Derbeth talk 22:46, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

NoEditSection?

Just wondering, what does the __NOEDITSECTION__ tag do when inserted into the header of a page? Urbane User (Talk) (Contributions) 17:15, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello again

[edit source]

Hello! You gave me a welcome message some time ago. (I was impressed to receive that on my first edit!) I was hoping you could offer me some advice, as it has not seemed to be forthcoming in other ways. I was planning to make a storyline study (very similar to your Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter) of some various works of fiction. Unfortunately, it seems that if a fictional work ever included a video game, it is considered a "game guide". I actually intend such a work in the vein more of the Harry Potter and Half-Life books here. However, one of your admins here on the admin's noticeboard indicated that such an effort would be deleted on sight. I'm really not sure what content policy such a thing would violate here, as not only are similar works here, but the policies seem to explicitly permit such things. Certainly, studies of a work's plot and Cliff's Notes are in use in many classes the world over, and that seems to be the primary criterion! I was hoping you could offer some clarity on this, or maybe point me to some policy I missed? Thanks! Seraphimblade 03:47, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Herbythyme,

Family circumstances require that I put the Foucault handbook on hold indefinitely. If you wish to remove it, you may go ahead and do so--I've archived my work.

No worries. I thought maybe you were basing it on votes and had miscounted. I agree that the arguements are more important than votes but some people won't voice their arguement if they simply agree that it's crap or agree with the nomination. The better arguements will usually come from those who disagree with the proposal because they have the 'most to lose'. I've no problem with your decision. Xania talk 12:24, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Herby,

Thanks for your comments about the copyright infringement, however i have permission from the Videojug website to use the content on their pages. I was actually told by a Wikipedia administrator (i know you're not totally associated with them!) that i could add pages to this website. The videojug website is actually a free resource for your users if they wish to get redirected to our website. Can you please let me know if adding material to your website is still ok. I believe that my content is valuable to the visitors at Wikibooks- so i really would like it to stay on your pages. Please can you reply as to the next stages, as i would like to add some more material (sparsely) but obviously it is quite time consuming! Thanks for the warning. Robert

Thanks for the message - as far as I am aware without specific written permission from the owners of the website t the Wikimedia foundation it would not be possible to host these pages as they are absolute copies. Please look at Wikibooks:Copyrights and then maybe Help:Boilerplate request for permission. I would also like a pointer to where you were given permission on Wikipedia to use the material and the admin's name - copyright policy is the same across all Wikimedia projects. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 09:48, 23 March 2007 (UTC) Retrieved from "http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/User_talk:Reever2"

I actually work for the organisation concerned, so i do have written permission from the website owner (in fact he is about five metres from me). If you would like me to change a few of these pages so they aren't absolute copies i can do that. The following extract came from Kariteh in the Wikipedia team. Hope that this is acceptable, and we can continue with this.

"This is the reason why the sister project Wikibooks has been created. Wikibooks is a collection of free "books" and annotated texts that are written collaboratively by anyone. While tutorials, guides, recipes, how-tos, etc. do not belong on Wikipedia, they are definively at home on Wikibooks. When people want to look for encyclopedic contents, they look here; when they look for how-tos, they look on Wikibooks. So you might want to check that project; there are a lot of other recipes there and yours would definitively be welcome. As a matter of fact, contents which are inapropriate for Wikipedia can often be moved to Wikibooks instead of being simply deleted or reverted". "So, as a conclusion, I hope you understand Wikipedia's reasonings and guidelines better now. Again, while recipes are not appropriate for an encyclopedia, they definitely are for Wikipedia's sister project Wikibooks". Kariteh 18:36, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok- Thanks for your help on this matter. I won't add any more content to your pages until a decision has been made. However i would like to add that any external link coming from your site is predominantly promoting some product i.e. taking you away from your site to theirs/ another. We also do not sell any products on our site! I hope that an agreement can be reached. Thanks again for understanding and trying to get to the bottom of it before deleting the appropriate content. Hope we can resolve this soon.

Hope I'm not intruding here... In the US, apparently, recipes are deemed facts and thus are not copyrightable. I can get the reference if you need it. Chazz (talk) 21:00, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll happily intrude also! US law does allow a list of ingredients, but a recipe is generally more than that. Where the recipe includes a description of the procedure or of the meal itself, it is subject to copyright law. [1] [2] [3]
Of course, WB must take into account the copyright situation in other countries too (yes, they do exist, they're out there somewhere!) so just because a plain list of ingredients is free of copyright under US law does not make it public domain for the rest of the world. Webaware talk 22:53, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually, a list of instructions (the procedure) isn't copyrightable. What is copyrightable is, as you say, the text explaining how lovely the dish is, or the particular way the dish's history has been described or whatever. But not the procedure. Kellen T 10:14, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for intro and feedback on my talk page. I've now added uk.d-i-y links to Wikibooks:How-tos bookshelf#External how-to sites which seems to be the correct place for such links, if they are useful (which I think they are). I was going to put them there first time around but didn't seem able to edit that page then, though I can now. Ho hum! --John Stumbles 23:47, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

You replied:

Sorry but such [external] links really are not appropriate to Wikibooks. As I said above the idea is to create "stand alone" textbook content. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:31, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Then what about the other external links in the External how-to sites from which you've just deleted the links I added? They're to external sites such as www.ehow.com/ and www.instructables.com/howtoons/ (which carry commercial advertsing payloads). Are they appropriate? And if not why have the External how-to sites section at all? I'd appreciate some clarification here. --John Stumbles 07:40, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

You replied:

   Ok -

      1. The link that you were placing is to a forum. I am not aware that of other pages with links to forums. These are such transient sites in terms of content that they will rarely be that relevant.
      2. The site is uk specific while Wikibooks is worldwide. If we allowed links to all such such from all around the world there would be nothing but links.

Thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:39, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. With respect to point 1 the links I placed were to
  1. a conventional website diyfaq.org.uk
  2. a wiki website wiki.diyfaq.org.uk and
  3. google groups' interface to the uk.d-i-y usenet group [4] (not forum! - contributors to the group who use that term get mildly flamed for doing so!).
All 3 (not 2) links work for me - which did not do so for you?. Whilst the content of the google page varies constantly, google's archive retains past articles so a search for, say, solar water heating brings up a mass of information which isn't even a red link in the Do-It-Yourself Wikibook.
On point 2 obviously the sites are UK-centric (although the principles of many topics are relevant to many other parts of the world). Is this a problem? I note that the entire Automobile Repair chapter in the Do-It-Yourself Wikibook, including one of the few articles which is not either a red link or a stub - Automobile Repair/99 mercury cougar alternator replacement - is highly US-centric. Is that OK but UK-centric is not?
--John Stumbles 12:42, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK - I really am not prepared to enter into an argument with you. I will happily consult other admins/the community to see if they agree.

Fair enough

The ability to "find" google groups is not really something that is that hard.

Agreed: google will easily enough find groups about widgets or whatever. Finding groups with good signal-to-noise ratios can be a bit harder though: that's where I, personally, find pointers & "heads up"s helpful.

In practice I think the [1] is really quite a useful link (and as it in turn links to google groups that again makes that link redundant) and probably should be in somewhere (I assume there will be a link back to Wikibooks placed there?)

There already is, and has been (to the Do-It-Yourself Wikibook) since the time I placed the first link in Do-It-Yourself#Guides in other wiki. Mind if I reinsert a link to the uk-di-y wiki then? And the FAQ (although that's also linked from the wiki).

That you consider some article US centric is correct but they do not have links in and the answer of course in a Wiki is feel free to add UK relevant text. Content is required not links.

I have considered contributing to the wikibook, and would have done if I'd been aware of it before we set up the uk.d-i-y wiki. However I've now put a lot of work into our own wiki and don't want to abandon it, and copying content to another wiki 'forks' effort which I've cautioned against in our own wiki. Ours has a significantly different culture from wikibooks anyway with quite an acceptance of external links where they seem (to us) appropriate. OTOH Wikibooks obviously has a lot better backing than us in the shape of the wikimedia foundation so I'm watching withy interest to see how Do-It-Yourself develops, and will strongly suggest pooling effort if it seems appropriate when & if the wikibook gets well established

Thank you --Herby talk thyme 12:57, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you too --John Stumbles 17:05, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry quite a lot of other stuff happened on this and other wikis! I will definitely not removed the link to your wiki if you put it back (tho I would not want to see it on many pages so try and and find one or two good ones?). Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:07, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

OK I've put back just the Wiki link into the External Hot-To sites list as before. regards --John Stumbles 08:28, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

De-Adminship

[edit source]

We discussed the idea at length here but most of the useful content is really built into the policy itself here and here. The policy came about largely because we had a ton of admins here that were given the status for no real reason, just that they were here at the beginning and I guess people figured they might need the tools at some point. In the large first round of de-adminships there were numerous users who had been absent for two years or so in most cases and had never even used the tools (as what was logged). Since these users had been gone for so long the community here found it unsafe that they still have these powerful features when they most likely have little to no concept of our policies here. The idea is that if you've been gone for a year and have done little to no editing since then (and we're pretty easy-going about this, something around 20 edits a year keeps you from losing the rights), you shouldn't have the tools since you can't be as trusted with enforcing proper procedure. Also, if new users see you listed as an admin they might try to contact you and receive no response, a discouraging event at the least if not dangerous should some vandalism or something else occur.

Most admins either had no response or were just "whatever" about it, but a couple "fought back", citing a bunch of practices that the Wikibooks community didn't really agree with, mostly coming from the Wikipedia system where I guess you never really lose the tools until you do something inappropriate with them. We don't want hijacked accounts or rogue, uninformed users to come around here and do damage since we don't watch pages as closely as Wikipedia does with all the bajillions of bots, etc. and so we're against the "just let the account sit there" approach. These users really shouldn't have even cared since almost all of them never even used the tools (so how do they even know what they're losing?) but to me I think they felt like it was an honor to them and they wanted to keep it as a trophy. I and others were not interested in that and tried to explain that this isn't a punishment and those users can come back and re-apply to be an admin when they need the tools again. A user did that a couple months ago (after he/she was de-sysopped) but had been gone for quite some time and so we weren't quite ready to give the tools back. We usually expect some involvement in community/policy discussion or vandalism control to get a successful sysop vote in.

That's the story I guess. Tell me if you have any questions. I'm staying a little bit inactive here lately (and you seem to be also) due to all the policy procedure circles and the most recent Panic garbage. I hope that's all over now, but some others are waging a war in some areas that I don't want to really get into besides to defend whatever I might add. Anyway, write me back at my talk and I hope you also are doing well. -withinfocus 18:18, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

When you revert vandalsim, the subject reads something like: "Revert to revision 772023 dated 2007-03-02 02:21:41 by 203.97.50.55 using popups". How would a person get such a comment automatiaclly, or would they have to do it manually. Or is it an admin tool?

WIW vote

[edit source]

I just wanted to get in touch with you about the WIW vote. I know that you arent a "policy guy", and that it's unlikely that you've even read the new proposal. I just wanted to assuage your fears that this discussion will come to an untimely end, or that "consensus" will be declared prematurely. The current vote tally is 11-3 (about 80%-20%), and that isn't even close to what we should have if we were going to declare the vote a "victory". I will personally throw a fit if anybody tries to declare this discussion over before a month or so has passed.

With concerns about consensus out of the way, I would hope that if you liked the policy you could vote for it. We've already received some complaints about the wording of some parts, and those issues would be addressed immediately following a positive vote (if such a thing is achieved).

If you still dont want to vote for it i can certainly understand your reservation, i was just hoping that i could dispel the fear that this is going to be some kind of a railroading exercise. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 15:15, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm certainly not trying to imply that you are ignorant, or that you don't see the things the rest of us do! I know you are more on top of this project then almost anybody else, so I hope i didnt offend you! I don't see this issue as being divisive, because the people who are dissenting are typically dissenting for separate reasons. Xania has fears about the scope, Rob is upset about the process, and Panic is... well i can't ever really figure out what panic is trying to say. I'm not interested in division (although some of my actions may tell a contradictory tale), and I would scrap the whole voting process and go back to square one if i felt this was more destructive then it is constructive. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 15:34, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good morning

[edit source]

I haven't heard from you in quite some time, and Wikibooks can be a very desolate place if we don't force ourselves to interact :). Anyway, the Spanish Wikibook is going well: I've now completed 7 lessons and sets of exercises. Have you seen it recently? Does it still look like it's going on the right track?

I also have a couple of questions. At what stage do you think nominating it for "good book" status be prudent? Certainly not now, but how does one judge completeness? Obviously a language Wikibook can never be finished, though I guess one can get really rather close to it. I guess when one runs out of grammar rules to teach, thus leaving simply words (at which point it's just a dictionary).

OK, that's enough for now. Do reply soon; it's lovely to hear from you. Kindest, warmest regards, Celestianpower 23:43, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and additionally, what do you think I should do with the section marked "Fragmentos para fusionar"? It has been contributed by others, and doesn't fit into the lessons right now, but might be useful later (particularly the bit on the past tense). It looks messy on the page, and I would ideally like to keep the page to just the reader-orientated course. Hmm. If you have any idea, I'd love to hear them. Cheerful valedictions, Celestianpower 23:51, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I keep myself sane by not becoming obsessed and editing every day. I did that with Wikipedia and it isn't healthy.
  1. Wow, thanks :). I might just go and nominate it then...
  2. Yes. However, print textbooks generally have far smaller goals than Wikibooks - mine aims to teach Spanish from beginner to advanced level, whereas in print, they tend to be following a particular sillibus for a year or whathaveyou.
  3. Yeah, I considered that. I might link it from "Páginas generales", or move the links to the talkpage. This is the problem though: textbooks need to be written by just one person far more than Encyclopedias. They have to follow the same style, and go through at the same pace, introducing new concepts gradually. Sure, people can help with proof-reading and fact-checking, but the main content has to be added by one person, in my opinion. Otherwise, you get things like these pages - just orphans, or someting like the Spanish Wikibook was before: simply a collection of individual grammar points.
  4. Yeah, don't bother with Wikipedia - it's just a breeding ground for trolls and bullies these days. Process has triumphed over flexibility and nothing can get done. It's still a good research tool, but working on it is no fun.
I hope you sort out your slug problem soon - sluggy letuce really isn't pleasant. Kind regards, Celestianpower 16:24, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're my main man for renaming pages and such with your bot, so if you have spare time would you feel like looking at Puzzles for re-organization? There's some discussion of this on the talk page but a lot of it has to do with colon convention which shouldn't be used. I figured you might be able to slash up all the puzzle pages and maybe even create some sub-categories like what's described on the talk page. I figure Capitalized Naming For All Pages should happen. Naming

[edit source]

Yeah now I see why people have been putting it off for so long, it's a real mess combining 3 or 4 different versions of naming conventions... its roughly somewhere between a third and a half done now, hopefully it'll be finished before TOO long... regards, Mattb112885 (talk) 16:56, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey Herby thanks for deleting those redirects, I have plenty more where those came from (about 200 in total from the puzzles book) but I'll mark them in small chunks to keep any one person from getting overwhelmed with them O_o. Hope you're doing well. Mattb112885 (talk) 15:30, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hahaha, I didn't see that, small world. I'd say go ahead and clear my move log but the problem is not all those redirects are orphans (some are linked to from peoples' user pages, and various other locations), however it probably wouldn't be too hard for those users to find the new pages so go for it if you want. Regards, Mattb112885 (talk) 15:39, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not sure what you mean by cast my eye over it but if you mean "ignore it", then I have no problem doing that :). If you want to delete them be my guest, it'd def. be faster than me tagging all of them and then having someone delete them. The vast majority of them are orphans anyways. Deleted "Public/sandbox

[edit source]

Hi,

I am trying to put together a clearer version of Sandbox because, as a newbie, I was mislead into thinking that I should modify that page.

So I am developing a new version of the template at User:Arsharpe/sandbox/sandboxTemplate and, once finished, would propose this as an update.

The current public sandbox WikiWikiSandbox seems to not help the user to get the best out of the Wiki and at worse can potentially can put people off. It would be really good if the public sandbox (i.e. for those without an account) had the "edit this page" icon bar, hence my Public/sandbox that you deleted.

It looks like in the past that there have been some issues with spaming, etc.

Is there a reason that WikiWikiSandbox cannot have the "edit this page" icon bar ?

Angelina Johnson / Alicia Spinnet (Muggles' Guide)

[edit source]

I see you've been doing a lot of reversion there, and thank you. But... it turns out that our vandal is correct, if very rude. I did make a mistake there, it is Angelina Johnson who is the Quidditch team captain, not Alicia Spinnet. I'll be making that correction, and so a lot of that stuff will be moving, on purpose. Chazz (talk) 15:10, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would say, yes, shorten it, but don't take it off. I mean, "the idiot who keeps putting this back" is not really the appropriate way to deal with this. A better way to deal with it is to do what I did -- move it to the appropriate character and leave comments in the edit reason. Of course, that would be constructive... and destruction is so much easier. Chazz (talk) 15:15, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Stroller Guides

[edit source]

I understand about needing the Websites permission...but I am working for Stroller.com! Obviously I was able to put that disclaimer on my articles so that gives permission for them to be used elsewhere Sarah.henderson 14:02, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey Herby, I just wanted to post my opinion, hope you don't mind! The boilerplate request for permissions seems to me to be only used in cases where we are asking for permission to use a non-free work. If an original author wants to donate materials to us, that should be perfectly allowed. We have accepted donations of material before, and some of that material has been posted already elsewhere on the internet.
Beyond that, if the stroller guide is released under the GFDL, we are able to copy that work here and use it as the basis for future derivative works, so long as we properly attribute it. To that effect, we could use it and simply post a link.
If this person is the original author, then she has the right to donate her materials here without having to jump through any hoops. If we must get some kind of "proof" however, we should ask that this user modify the text of that external website in a way that demonstrates that she is who she says she is.
This does point to a need, perhaps, for us to come up with a consistent procedure that a person can follow if they want to donate pre-existing materials to our project, but in lieu of such a procedure we need to make decisions on a per-item basis. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 14:14, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I didn't mean to step on your toes herby! I'm just going off my interpretations of things. The way I see it, it doesnt matter whether an author writes their content directly onto our website, writes it on their personal computers first and then uploads it, or even writes it on a different website and then copies it here. Everytime i contribute content, I dont need to send my permission for me to use it to the foundation! Maybe i'm missing something, but that's my impression of it. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 14:19, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ive just been looking at the list of images with missing copyright statuses and noticed the absolutely huge amount of images from the fhsst textbook that are missing copyright information, there must be at last 200 of them.

I was wondering, how would the community deal with these images, hypothetically, would they have to be removed, cause if they were it would rip the book to shreds?

Free Citizens Moral Guide

[edit source]

Link: Free Citizens Moral Guide

Thank you for your comments. I posted a request at the Staff Lounge, as you recommended. Sorry for the spam. My CTRL+S reflex strikes again.

I disagree that this project does not fit here, for being original research, since there are other projects similar in attitude and these seemingly were approved. Please see Developing A Universal Religion. As a free citizen of the community I request, nay, demand equal rights. ;-)

I posted with this content:

Rationale

I wish to write a self help guide using a collaborative effort. I aim to speak about how to live life in a modern world. I aim to collaboratively create an universal moral guide for all free thinking people in the modern world. Free thinking people of the free culture movement and others who think like us.

You can see a rough draft of some of my thoughts at my blog here: REFIT: Refitting our World. Bit by bit.

I believe a Wiki provides the best way to organically write such a document. I am thinking about dividing the guide in two parts: static and dynamic.

The static part would have personal thoughts, of me or others, signed with our name/alias, on the matter and be protected from changes from others to prevent vandalism and distortion of message. It would serve as a template to the collaborative effort.

The dynamic part would start with the static templates of our personal thoughts and then, collaboratively and in public, organically elaborate on then, to enhance the quality and global reach, converge to a compromise and optimum solution. Just like in Wikipedia.

I believe this effort is not dissimilar to efforts already in this site such as Developing A Universal Religion. But our organic approaches are different. I go for a bottom-up approach, that goes for top-down approach.

I request your thoughts on how I should proceed to achieve this.

Kind regards, VascoCosta

I should be the one thanking you for having the patience of answering my persistent requests! :-)
I believe you are a good, kind hearted person and did your best. Thank you.

I was going through the images flagged as copyright-unknown and i came across four templates Template:FF6: Boss, Template:FF6: Bosses/Ultros Template:FF6: Bosses/Vargas and Template:FF6: Bosses/Tunnel Armor. As these were for the Final Fantasy VI book which has now been transwikied to strategywiki and deleted can these be deleted? Or should they be kept for some reason.

Thanks, i had wondered why you blocked the ip address after i had deleted the page. I think i'm starting to get the hang of the delete button (fingers crossed). If i don't get chance to talk to you in the next few days, have a good holiday. :-) Urbane (Talk) (Contributions) 15:46, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Quick Thanks

[edit source]

Herby,

I noticed you reverted back to a prior version for the Human Physiology chapter on integumentary system when a big section was deleted. Just wanted to thank you for catching that and fixing the problem! Provophys 18:48, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I like the integumentary system chapter but feel it would be better in an anatomy book rather than a physiology book. How would I go about moving it?

Aspies Book/Resources

[edit source]

I think perhaps that anonymous user might of had a good idea. By linking to the website in which the list is maintained, there is no need to copy this list here, which could quickly become outdated. I know you prefer to keep links to other websites to a minimal, so did you revert because you felt it was violating WB:WIW#Wikibooks_is_not_a_soapbox? I'm not sure whether it was or not, since the book is about advocacy to begin with, making it at least within scope of the book. --darklama 12:27, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can't argue with you (I posted on the admin board about it immediately after I'd done it. The revert was in response to content removal without explanation rather than anything else, feel free to revert me --Herby talk thyme 12:30, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, I oppose it...

[edit source]

I oppose your interpretation that the book/page Morality/Murder should be deleted, based on the result of the previous discussion about it on VfD now closed by you.

The indication that the book was a copyvio was not validated, the votes were not enough and not based on a proper reason for the deletion (all were based on the presumable copyvio).

As such I have changed the impending doom tag to the previous VfD (so not to have the page deleted). I ask you that you reformulate the VfD with a justification for the delete or remove the VfD tag completely. ---- —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Panic2k4 (talkcontribs) 16:40, 7 Oct 2007 (UTC)

Don't let this get to you, Panic's behavior is hardly representative of Wikibooks at large. I stand behind your action to close the VfD, a single opposition isnt enough to halt a VfD, it's left up to the best judgement of an admin (and I would consider your "best judgement" to be a very reliable metric). Mike.lifeguard already re-closed the nomination, so there is no going back now. Sorry. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 13:48, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikibooks talk:Blocking guideline

[edit source]

The policy was now put forward as a guideline (not a policy, like you indicate on your vote). and a guideline can be broken with justification (so new and unexpected situations will not be a problem). In any case it is better to have the guideline that to let it be open to personal interpretations and the text cover most of the problems and discussions we have been having in the last years in cases the block action was used. --Panic 16:05, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Question regarding watchlist

Hi. I have a question. Is there any way I can put an entire book on my watchlist without individually adding all the pages? Thanks--Shahab 05:06, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

IP

[edit source]

Yeah, I was going to look into it later, just blocked short to turn off the spam faucet.

You, of course, may feel welcome to undo/redo/nuke my blocks whenever you feel it appropriate :). --SB_Johnny | PA! 12:59, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

How can you tell it's an OP?

[edit source]

Is this a thing that checkuser reveals, or is there something I'm missing? Mike.lifeguard | talk 16:51, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think I figured out the right part of your .js. The block link provided by {{proxyip}} has an expiry time of indefinite. If we just change the template, we (I; I shouldn't speak for you) could block the rest for 8 months(?) with an inordinate but not outrageous expenditure of time. Would that be kosher? Vandalism

[edit source]

Good to see you Herby :-) He's made quite a mess hasn't he? What happened to to the Vandalism in Progress page? I wasn't quite sure what to do. --AdRiley 12:14, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, please undelete my talk page, it has non vandal contents in the previous revision :) --Ans

Could you please block vandals before you start reverting them from now on, so they can't continue to increase the work load of reverting them? I noticed that the vandal was being allowed to continue to vandalize while you were reverting there changes, before you blocked them. --darklama 20:55, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Was this comment refering to myself or Herby? If it was Herby then you are mistaken as the first thing they did was to block the vandal. If myself then I can't as I'm not an admin, I just figured I keep reverting his and mine talk pages to try and distract him from do so much damage while I waited for an admin to turn up. --AdRiley 22:27, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was referring to Herby. From what I saw from the recent changes page, it looks like he first reverted about 5 pages or more before he blocked, which by then had given the vandal time to vandalize way more pages. --darklama 22:43, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Here are the logs that I see. Herby's first log entry on Nov 15 is:
08:11, 15 November 2007 Herbythyme (Talk | contribs | block) blocked IJstLrndAlotAboutStargateAtWP
(Talk | contribs) with an expiry time of infinite (account creation disabled) ‎ (vandalism) (unblock)
This is followed by several page deletions and revisions. At 8:36, Herby did a CU on the vandal and got these IP addresses, after the vandal had been blocked (with account creation disabled) and the mess had already been cleaned up. He also did a CU for the IP address on meta to double-check the situation there. Here are the block log entries after the CU check:
08:49, 15 November 2007 Herbythyme (Talk | contribs | block) blocked 88.108.200.223 (Talk) with an
expiry time of 1 day (account creation disabled, autoblock disabled) ‎ (unblock)
08:37, 15 November 2007 Herbythyme (Talk | contribs | block) blocked 71.108.63.152 (Talk) with an
expiry time of 1 week (account creation disabled, autoblock disabled) ‎ (Haggar) (unblock)
My conclusion of this is that he did block first, cleaned up second, then did a very thorough CU check both here and on meta, blocked the offending IPs, and cleaned up more mess. Missing the first block log entry, it would certainly appear that Herby did things in the wrong order. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 15:30, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're right, maybe we don't say it enough around here. You certainly do deserve this small token of verbal appreciation, and I would hope that people were thinking it even if they don't always (ever) take the time to say it. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 15:09, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Golden Wiki

For continuing to voluntarily fight vandalism and not giving up, despite being under appreciated for your efforts to fight vandalism and keep Wikibooks free of vandalism, and for letting other people know that they are appreciated when everyone else forgets to do so, I hereby give you this Golden Wiki Award for your contributions and outstanding performance. Without you, vandalism would have overtaken Wikibooks long ago. Thank You. --darklama 16:21, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad that you were around and paying attention. --xixtas talk 17:31, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well it seems that everyone beat me to the punch. I would have thanked you at the time, but I was sitting in an airport, and I wanted to get as much done before I had to leave. In the end, boarding was called before I finished. So, much belatedly, thank you for this and every other time you've been around to block & revert when nobody else has been. I'm sure the drama isn't helping to convince you to stick around or contribute more, but I think its safe to say we all appreciate your work, and hope it continues in the future. My thoughts

[edit source]

I've spent a little time reflecting on this over the weekend. Not the vandalism issues (which is frankly ludicrous - why would I wish to prolong the work, it took 25 minutes anyway) but on the "anger & defensiveness" issue and realised that I am getting like that here.

I'd ask anyone who is interested to checkout my other talk pages and contributions and see if you find anything other than maybe a trace of irritation. I don't think so, so others may wish to reflect on that - "behaviour breeds behaviour". I've met some of the nicest folk here and hope I will stay in contact with some of them for a long time to come. However I think for my sake and that of the community it may be time to hand over the tools and move on. Getting anything done here is like herding cats (not an insult, I like cats). I'll not do anything hasty - I have the "Picture of the Year" completion coming up on Commons in Jan (a great showcase for some very talented Wikimedians) and the Steward elections on Meta (those who are interested really should take a look and vote, there are some very good candidates). I'll review the situation after that.

Thanks again for the appreciation, it may well be best to consider me rather absent for now, regards --Herby talk thyme 09:03, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think that your only problem here, Herby (if one can even call it a problem) is that you don't have a full-enough sense of your value to this project. You just don't realize how valuable you are here! When somebody criticizes you, you need to just stand your ground and say "Shut up biotch, I'm Herbythyme! I'm a freaking celebrity around here!". Well, maybe it wouldn't be good to call anybody a "biotch", but I think you get my point. All the glowing support votes that you get for your various RFA nominations around the wiki-world should be evidence of your celebrity status. step back and take a deep breath if you absolutely need to, otherwise you're too important to us to be threatening to leave. --Whiteknight (Page) (Talk) 13:12, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think things often get tense around here, and I'm sure it is not meant as anything personal, though I think I understand your frustration (which is why I try to stay out of politics around here). I do agree that your contributions have been very valuable, and hope that we haven't burned you out. Mattb112885 (talk to me) 15:43, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
G'day mate, I'm late to the party as usual, but want to throw in my AUD0.02 worth. First off, you do great work here and that is widely recognised, even though you may not feel that it is sometimes. Secondly, words written in black on white don't convey tone as easily as spoken words, and this often leads to misinterpretation - don't read too much into the comments of others, especially when they are mistaken. Thirdly, you need a break! That doesn't necessarily mean that you need to leave us altogether, just that you sound wound-up and stressed and need to step back for a while. As for "behaviour breeds behaviour", that is very true, but also there is the option to turn the other cheek and accept an explanation at face value sometimes. Be the better man (or woman, or little furry creature from Alpha Centauri). But please, mate, do take a break - you deserve one! Webaware talk 02:58, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey Herby I was eavesdropping a while back and you mentioned to Mike to let you know when these pages come up, the most recent one I came across was by 200.163.10.126 (discuss · email · contribs · logs · count) and was created at Board game/w/index.php. Not sure what all these things are about but they are kinda annoying, I must say. Mattb112885 (talk to me) 18:05, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
