Etymology

From earlier Modern Dutch wisconst (literally art of what is known). Equivalent to wis +‎ -kunde. Purism introduced as a calque of Ancient Greek μαθηματικός (mathēmatikós) by Simon Stevin in the 16th century to replace the Dutch word mathematica which was a borrowing from Latin mathēmatica.
