From Middle Dutch verminken, a dialectal variant of vermenken (to injure permanently), from ver- + menken (variant minken), from the root manc (a limping or lame person) (cf. Dutch mank), from Latin mancus (maimed or defective), from Proto-Indo-European *man-ko- (maimed in the hand), from *man-.
