From Late Latin expe(n)sa, from Latin expensus, from expendere. In the meaning of "food" probably influenced by Middle High German spīse, Old High German spīsa, itself derived from Late Latin spēsa. Cognate with Italian spesa (expenditure, expenses) and German Speise (food, meal).
